Миф о реке Арахтос

О реке Арахтос в Эпире существует немало мифов. Вот один из них.

Арахтос был духом и было у него два брата - Ахелос (белый) и Лурос (тихий). Все три брата путешествовали от одной горы Эпира к другой, охотились, а добычу прятали в деревне под названием Метсово. Арахтос был жаден и поедал добычу своих братьев. Однажды ночью, пока он спал, братья сбежали - один в Превезу, другой в Тиссалу. Когда Арахтос проснулся и увидел, что их рядом нет  - разозлился и принялся искать. Он не знал в каком направлении братья сбежали и заплутал. Где не останавливался - там появлялся каньон. Плача от гнева, он добрался до моря и утопился. Братья слышали его плач, но побоялись показаться ему на глаза - думали, что он их съест. Они принялись убегать от него и где бы не останавливались - там появлялись канавы. В конце концов они тоже оказались у моря и, поняв, что брата больше нет. тоже утопились от горя. Духи исчезли, а их слезы добрались до моря. Так эти три реки получили свои названия - Арахтос, Ахелос и Лурос.

Greeks always loved the myths, so it’s natural that there are also many myths about the great Arachthos river in Epirus. According to one of them, once upon a time Arachthos was a poltergeist and he had two brothers: the White and the Silent. The three brothers traveled from mountain to mountain of Epirus, hunting, and they stored their prey in Metsovo. But since Arachthos was greedy and kept eating the shares of his siblings, one night while he was sleeping, they escaped and the one of them went to Preveza and the other one to Thessaly. When Arachthos woke up and saw that his brothers were missing, he got very angry and he decided to persecute them. Since he didn’t know which of the two directions to choose, he started to walk among them. Wherever he stepped, he opened a canyon. Weeping from anger, he reached the sea, fell into the waters and drowned. When his brothers heard him crying, they were afraid that he would eat them if he found them. So they start running away and wherever they stepped, they opened huge grooves, until they reached the sea and drowned as well. When the poltergeists were killed, the waters from their tears found their ways till the sea. The three rivers got their names: Arachthos, White or Acheloos and Silent or Louros.
