Exhibition: “Domenikos Theotokopoulos between Venice and Rome”
Apart from the exhibition “The Friendly Cycle of El Greco in Toledo” which is presented in the main building of Museum Benaki, another exhibition of this amazing artist is presented in the Building at 138 Pireos street of the same museum.  It is the exhibition “Domenikos  Theotokopoulos between Venice and Rome”, which is a collaboration of the Benaki Museum and the Historical Museum of Crete, where it was initially presented (June 21 to October 25, 2014). It is centered on the two wonderful paintings of the artist, the “Baptism of Christ” and the “View of Mt Sinai and the Monastery of St. Catherine with Scenes of Pilgrims”, which are permanently exhibited in the premises of the Historical Museum of Crete, in Heraklion. The exhibition aims to investigate the first steps of the Cretan artist in Venice and the beginning of the Roman period of his life (1567-1574), through paintings, engravings and manuscripts which illuminate his evolution. It also includes other  important paintings which are presented for the first time in Greece, such as the “Adoration of the Shepherds” from the Agnes Etherington Art Center (Kingston, Canada), the” Portrait of Giulio Clovio” by Sofonisba Anguissola (a great Italian Renaissance painter) which belongs to a private collection, a portrait of Fulvio Orsini by an unknown artist from the collections of the Museum Uffizi, and the El Greco’s painting “Boy blowing on an ember to light a candle” from the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte in Naples.
