“Strange Cities: Athens”

Exhibition: “Strange Cities: Athens”
How would you portray a city that you have never visited, without even seeing pictures of it? This is the concept of the very interesting exhibition which is presented these days in the Diplarios School, in Athens. Pop artists from all over the world, photographers, graphic designers, painters and illustrators, all influenced by the fashion, were invited to create works which portray Athens, a city they have never seen.

Apart from what they may had heard about this city with the great history, their inspiration was the box they received with the works of important Greek artists. This box included the poem “Jasmine” by George Seferis (the great Greek poet who was awarded with the Nobel of Literature in 1963), two chapters of the book “The Athens of one journey” by Petros Markaris (a significant Greek author and co-writer of Theo Angelopoulos in film-scripts), the song “A Magical City” by Manos Hadjidakis (the famous Greek composer, who received an Academy Award for Best Original Song for his song “Never on Sunday” from the homonymous film in 1960), the music track “2” by Konstantinos Bhta (the imaginative Greek musician and composer of Ambient, Trip-hop, Electronica and Alternative music, who was member of the Greek group Stereo Nova and now does a very successful solo career), a Stuffed recipe (one of the most traditional Greek foods) and twelve
sound files from Athens. The box did not include any picture of Athens.

The mission could be impossible, but the talented artists used their imagination and created amazing works, that portray Athens, a totally strange city for them, which is so worthy to visit though. The exhibition is organized by the Onassis Cultural Center.

Exhibition: “Strange Cities: Athens”, April 20-June 28 2015, Diplarios School, 3 Theatrou Square,  Athens, metro stations Omonoia and Panepistimio. Visiting hours: Daily, 12:00-21:00. Free admission
