Acropolis of Athens
Some places are so mythical, that you may know them even by their rumor. Acropolis is more than a mythical place. It is the trademark of Athens, an eternal symbol of the grandeur of the ancient Greek civilization and art, the most important ancient monument of the western world and part of the world cultural heritage. Perched on a rocky hill of 156 meters, it dominates the city of Athens, a white cluster of monumental monuments in front of their perfection you can only feel humility.

It is believed that the holy, as it is known, rock of Acropolis was inhabited since the 7th millennium BC, while the earliest finds are dated from the Neolithic period (3500 BC). Originally it was the basis of the local lord, which was surrounded  by the palaces and the houses of  nobility. As it gradually became a religious position, the palaces  were replaced by temples and shrines. Around 570 BC the most sacred temple dedicated to Athena Polias was erected, but unfortunately what remains of this are only the foundations and a few friezes and sculptures which are now kept in the Acropolis Museum.

The archaeological finds indicate that in the place of the Parthenon, the main temple of Acropolis, there was a posterior temple, the initial Parthenon. The Parthenon we know today was built in 447 BC, by Ictinus and Kallikrates, under the supervision of Phidias. It was dedicated to the virgin goddess Athena. Phidias designed and built the amazing decoration of the temple and also the huge statue of Athena, made of gold and ivory, which was kept inside. This magnificent temple was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

The small temple of Goddess Niki (known as temple of Wingless Niki) was built by Kallikrates in 427-24 BC, while the Propylaea, the great entrance of the holy rock, was built by Pericles in 437 BC, based on designs of Mnesikles. The temple of the Erechtheion was also built during the golden era at the end of the 5th century and it was the last, most complex and richer decorated of the buildings that were built during Pericles’ time. The trademark of Erechtheion is the Caryatids, the six glorious female statues which support the roof in the south side of the temple. The Caryatids you will see today in Acropolis are copies, while the original statues are kept in the Acropolis Museum.

Being in Athens without going to Acropolis is something like sacrilege, because it is one of the few places in the whole world you cannot miss to visit.
