Древний театр Эпидавра
Среди множества древних театров в Греции, театр Эпидавра считается наиболее красивым и, что немаловажно, наиболее хорошо сохранившимся театром с превосходной акустикой. Он был построен в 340 году до н.э. и предназначался для развлечения знати асклепиона в Эпидавре - считалось, что театр благоприятно влияет на психическое и физическое здоровье пациентов. Древний театр вмещал более 14000 зрителей и был разделен на две части: 21 ряд с местами для обычных людей и 34 нижних ряда для священников и правителей. Говоря современным языком - VIP зона. А заново он был открыт после раскопок, которые провёл археолог Панагис Кавадиас в период с 1870—1926 годов и уже спустя несколько лет ,в 1938 году театр принял первый после археологических работ спектакль. Это была постановка трагедии Софокла “Электра”. Во время войны выступления пришлось прекратить, но в начале 50-х были проведены реставрационные работы и начиная с 1955 года тут проводится крупнейший театральный фестиваль, каждое лето собирающий театралов со всего мира. В рамках фестиваля в Эпидавре участвовали некоторые из величайших греческих и зарубежных артистов: Алексис Минотис, Танос Капсопулос, Анна Синодину а также Мария Каллас.

The Ancient Theater of Epidaurus
The Ancient Greeks loved theater. For them it was not only a way of entertainment. It was mostly a way of education and a way to worship and honor their gods. Every oracle or sanctuary in every city had their own theaters. Of all the ancient theaters that had been found in Greece, however, the one of the sanctuary of Asclepios in the Ancient Epidaurus was the most important and the most magnificent.
According to the ancient Greek geographer and traveler, Pausanias (2nd century AD), the theater of the Ancient Epidaurus was the most perfect and most famous of its kind, combining elegance, balanced proportions and great acoustics due to its unique design. It was built on the west side of the mount Kynortios, in the late classical period, around 340-330 BC, during the general reconstruction of the sanctuary, and was used until at least the 3rd century AD.
This glorious theater was hosting the musician, singing and dramatic races of the Asclepeia. The Asclepeia was celebrations in the honor of Asclepios and were taking place every four years, right after the Isthmian games and other performances of drama, which were part of the cult of the god.
Although this magnificent monument was embanked for centuries, it was still visible. It was revealed entirely, however, after the archaeological excavations in 1881-83.
Since 1954, the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus operates every summer, hosting the unmatched plays of the Ancient Greek drama in the context of the Epidaurus Festival. It is needless to say that attending a performance of ancient drama in this theater is a unique experience and a real honor not only for the spectators, but also for the actors who participate in the performance.
