Necromanteion
Following the signs, and after passing through the picturesque villages Kanallaki, Kastri and Messopotamos, the road takes you to a little hill where the Necromanteion is placed. Necromanteion means “Oracle of Death” and it was an ancient Greek temple of necromancy devoted to Hades and Persephone, the gods of the underworld. According to the tradition, it was located on the banks of the Acheron river, near the ancient city of Ephyra. This site was believed by devotees to be the door to Hades, which was the realm of the dead. The nature around the place is beautiful, while the surviving buildings of the archaeological site create a mystical atmosphere. The main sanctuary of Necromanteion is an imposing rectangular building, surrounded by polygonal rectangular enclosure. It is separated by two parallel walls in the main hall and two side aisles. Beneath the main hall there is the palace of Hades and Persephone. To the west of the original temple, a complex with a central courtyard was added later. These spaces were used as rooms for the priests and the visitors.
Most of the findings of Necromanteion have been transferred to the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina. This magical place now hosts cultural events. At least once a year, every year, a performance of ancient drama is presented in its prestigious area. This year (20.06.2014) it was the turn of Antigone of Sophocles, with free admission.
