Asclepeion
The Asclepeion of Epidaurus was the most celebrated healing center of the Classical world. More than two hundred spas throughout the eastern Mediterranean were considered its institutes. Its monuments are not only world-famous masterpieces of the ancient Greek art, but also an exceptional testimony to the practice of medicine in antiquity. It included two sanctuaries, where two therapist gods were worshiped together: Apollo Maleata at the oldest one, in Kynortion hill, and Asclepios at the newer flat sanctuary, where the famous rituals of healing have been taking place. It is said that the patients, in order to find out the right cure for their ailments, had to spend a night in the enkoimeteria, a big sleeping hall. In their dreams, God Asclepios (Apollo’s son) would advise them what they had to do in order to regain their health. Around the shrine of Asclepios there were buildings to serve the patients and the pilgrims, and structures for the needs of Asclepeia, the Athletic Games which were established in the 4th century B.C. and had a nationwide character. There are also preserved remnants of bathing facilities, a large hotel, named Katagogion, which had 160 rooms for the accommodation of the patients and their escorts, the palaestra, the gymnasium, the conservatory, the stage, the theater and other smaller temples. Within the archaeological site there is also the museum of Asclepeion, which hosts the numerous findings from the excavations and it is one of the most important museums of its kind.
