Thiseio
It is one of the most famous neighborhoods in Athens, known from the ancient times, located northwest of the Acropolis, 1,5 km southwest of the downtown. In antiquity, the processions of the great Panathenaic Festival, directed to the Parthenon, have been passing by a sloping road which started from Thiseio. The imposing Temple of Hephaestus, also known as Thiseio, stands there and gave to the region its name, as in earlier times it was considered a temple of Theseus.  In Thiseio you can visit the historical church Agioi Asomatoi, located in the namesake square, a few meters away from the temple of Hephaestus. It is a small and simple cruciform church with a narthex and a characteristic Athenian dome supported by four pillars, built in the third quarter of the 11th century. Other important buildings of the area are the two Jewish Synagogues of Athens, the Benaki Museum (of Islamic Art), the Museum of Makronisos, the Museum Herakleidon and the Conservatory Athenaeum which is dedicated to Maria Callas. Apart from its historical and cultural character, Thiseio is also one of the most popular nightspots in the city, full of restaurants, cafes and bars, especially during the summer.

How to get here: By metro, metro station Thiseio.
