Святой Монастырь Варлаама

В Фессалии, на вершинах скал расположились шесть действующих монастырей. Называются они - Метеоры. И Святой Монастырь Варлаама - один из них. По величине и по значимости он второй после Преображенского Монастыря. Первый храм на этой горной вершине был построен в XIV веке. В 1518 году два монаха проживших до этого семь лет в Преображенском Монастыре поднялись на скалу с целью отремонтировать этот храм. Но реставрация затянулась и они так и остались жить на скале. Постепенно к ним присоединялись и другие монахи, число которых к середине XVI века достигло тридцати. В 1542 году они воздвигли еще один храм с двумя куполами. Назван он был Храмом Всех Святых. Он богато украшен фресками предположительно кисти Франгоса Кателаноса. Многие из его работ которого находятся в Великой Лавре Афона. В юго-восточном углу притвора находится захоронение основателей монастыря Нектария и Феофана. После их смерти монастырь продолжал процветать получая от верующих земельные угодья, оливковые плантации и даже деревни. В северной части монастыря расположена часовня трех святителей, построенная в 1627 году.

В наши дни в помещении бывшей трапезной расположен музей. Находится Святой Монастырь Варлаама в непосредственной близости от Преображенского Монастыря. Посещение обоих монастырей бесплатное.

Часы посещения: 9:00-16:00 зимой (ноябрь-март), кроме вторника и пятницы. Летом (апрель-октябрь) те же часы, кроме пятницы.

 

Как добраться до Святого Монастыря Варлаама в Метеорах:

 

- на автобусе из Афин до Трикалы с автовокзала Кифисью. Далее на автобусе до Калабаки.

- на машине из Афин (400 км) по национальной трассе Афины-Ламия, далее по местной трассе Домокос-Кардица-Трикала.

- на машине из Салоников (250 км) по национальной трассе Салоники-Афины до города Лариса, далее по местной трассе Лариса-Трикала

It is the second largest monastery in the Meteora complex and it is built on an imposing rock that faces the Monastery of Grand Meteora. The monastery owes its name to the ascetic anchorite-Varlaam, who first inhabited the rock in 1350 and built there some cells and a temple in the name of the Three Hierarchs. Soon the monastery was deserted, but it was revived by the Monks brothers from Ioannina, Theophanes and Nektarios, in 1518 AD. On the ruins of the old buildings they rebuilt the Church of Saints and the Church of John the Baptist, which are two of the most beautiful churches of Meteora. Back then the monastery was accessible with scaffolding, which later was replaced by large ladders and a net they use even today for transporting food and materials for the maintenance of the monastery. In 1923, the monks carved into the rock 195 steps that lead us today with security at the top. The main church, dedicated to All Saints, is in the Athonite type (cross-in-square with dome and choirs), with spacious narthex which is surrounded by a dome. The church was built in 1541/42 and decorated in 1548, while the narthex was decorated in 1566. The impressive frescoes of the church, considered among the best of Meteora, have been painted in the mid 15th century by the great painter Franc Katelano. In the monastery there is also the building of the sacristy-Museum which has been repaired in recent years. It includes 290 valuable manuscripts and relics, post-Byzantine icons, embroidered vestments and the impressive brocade Epitaphe, in green velvet, a work of 1609. Quite rare are the incunabula of the monastery. The Chapel of the Three Hierarchs is located in the northwest of the rock. It was built in 1627 and decorated in 1637 by the Pastor John Kalambaka.

How to get to Meteora: From Athens (distance 352 km), by car via Α/Δ ΠΑΘΕ/E75/Α1. From Thessalioniki (distance 230 km) via Egnatia Odos/E90/A2. From Trikala (distance 25,4 Km) via National Road Trikala-Ioannina/E92/E06.

 

How to get there: At the fork near the Monastery Roussano, turn left. In less than a kilometer, a road to the left leads to the monastery Varlaam (in about 200 m).
