Syntagma Square
The most famous square in Athens, the trademark of the city, the one that the eyzones can gaze when they stand still in front of the Hellenic Parliament and the place where the Athenians gather every time they want to protect or celebrate (like on the New Year’s Eve). The Syntagma Square is all of the above and many more.

It was constructed in 1835. The initial name was “Square of the Old Royal Palace” because of its position (the building of the Hellenic Parliament which is located across the street used to be the Old Royal Palace). In 1843, the Athenians gathered in this square shouting “Long live the Constitution” and asking from the King Otto to lay a constitution. The square was renamed in Syntagma (Constitution) Square and from that historic moment was turned into the meeting point of the Athenians every time they want to express their feelings. Even today, in Syntagma Square is where all protests end up, like the ones that happened in the last few years against the Greek Financial Crisis. In a few words, the Syntagma Square is where the history of Greece is written.

Apart from the historical importance though, the Syntagma Square is also a very beautiful square, framed by some of the most classy hotels of Athens and near to the most famous neighborhoods of downtown, like Kolonaki, Plaka, Monastiraki, Psirri and Ermou Street. Your tour in the center of Athens can always start or end up here.
