Олимпийский стадион в Афинах
Один из современных объектов гордости Афинян - это Олимпийский спортивный комплекс в пригороде Афин Маруси. Этот комплекс, один из крупнейших в европе, так же известный как ОАКА, носит имя Спироса Люиса - первого обладателя золотой медали на первых возрожденных Олимпийских игр в 1896 году. Строительство началось в 1980 году, а 8 сентября 1982 года состоялось торжественное открытие. Как раз в день открытия 13 чемпионата мира по легкой атлетике. В течении последующих нескольких лет вокруг главного стадиона появились еще несколько объектов: велодром, аквацентр, теннисный центр, объединяющий 16 кортов и многие другие. Тут проводились Средиземноморские игры в 1991 году, Чемпионат мира по легкой атлетике в 1997 году, Чемпионат мира по баскетболу в 1997 году. Однако крупнейшим спортивным событием, прошедшим в этом месте были Олимпийские игры в 2004 году. Специально к ним комплекс был полностью реконструирован по проекту испанского архитектора Сантьяго Калатравы. Кстати, еще один объект, построенный по его проекту в Афинах - Мост Калатравы, можно увидеть неподалеку от станции метро Катехаки. Конечно же, при строительстве Олимпийского центра не обошлось без археологических находок. Во время возведения теннисных кортов, строители нашли древнюю гробницу 400-375 годов до н.э.. Также среди других современных объектов находился Акведук Адриана, построенный в период 125-140 годов н.э..
В наши дни на Олимпийском стадионе помимо спортивных мероприятий проводятся также концерты.

The Athens Olympic Sports Complex
One of the facilities the city of Athens is proud of is the imposing Athens Olympic Sports Complex, which is one of the most complete athletic centers in Europe - and definitely one of the most beautiful. Its second name is “Spiros Louis”, who was the first athlete of marathon who ever won the gold medal at the Olympic Games (1896). The Athens Olympic Sports Complex consists of five major venues, as well as other supplementary sport facilities and it is located in the area of Maroussi (northeast of Athens). The construction began in 1980 and the inauguration took place on September 8, 1982, the opening day of the 13th European Championship Athletics ’82. During the next few years, around the main Olympic Stadium, more athletic facilities were added, such as the Olympic Velodrome (inaugurated in 1991), the Olympic Aquatic Centre (1991), the Olympic Indoor Arena Team Games (1995) and the Olympic Tennis Center (2004). It was redesigned by the brilliant Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava in order to host the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. Calatrava’s work is also the gorgeous mobile canopy over the main stadium. Other impressive facilities of the complex, apart from the athletic ones, are the Wall of Nations, a sculpture made of tubular steel, which is designed to be driven mechanically in a wavelike motion and functions as a giant screen for projections, and the Agora, a modular structure of light steel, inspired by the model of the ancient Greek meeting place, which runs in an arc along the northern edge of the Common Domain, alongside a dual band of water and trees. For the record, as in Athens and the rest of Greece is very common to discover ancient findings during the manufacturer works, few meters away from the installation of the tennis courts an ancient tomb of an athlete was found (400-375 BC), while through the facilities of the Complex passes the Hadrian’s Aqueduct, work of Emperor Hadrian, which was started constructing in 125 AD and was completed in 140 AD. Today, apart from the big athletic events, the Athens Olympic Sports Complex also hosts the biggest music concerts in Athens.
