Eretria
Eretria is located in Euboea and is an important natural harbor of the island with a very significant history. Actually, it was the second strongest city of Euboea, after Chalkida. Are you ready to travel back in time and learn a few things about this beautiful city? According to the pottery fragments which were found in the area, it seems that it was first inhabited in the late Neolithic period. It began to grow during the Mycenaean period, especially after 1400 BC. Homer also mentions it as one of the cities that had sent ships in the Trojan War. As an urban center though, it began to bloom during the 8th century BC. Eretria became a great naval power, with many colonies on the coasts and the islands of the Aegean Sea, in Crimean Peninsula and in Great Greece, as the southern Italy was called back then because of the multitude of the Greek colonies. The growing power of Eretria preoccupied the neighboring Chalkida and led the two cities in the known Lilantio War (end of the 8th century BC), which was the first war ever between two Greek cities.  The war did not hinder the development of Eretria. In the third quarter of the 6th century BC it minted its own coins, while in the late 6th century its regime became democracy.  The Persians destroyed Eretria in 490 BC, but the city found again the way to the top.  In 338 BC Eretria was dominated by the Macedonians. In these years, the walls were repaired and extended, many private and public buildings were built and the theater got its final form. The city was destroyed by the Romans in 198 BC and again in 87 BC and that was the end for Eretria, which was abandoned and gradually deserted. Remnants of its glorious past are today the Temple of Apollo, which is the most important and most famous monument of Eretria, the Ancient Theater, at the west part of the city, the temple of Isis behind the small harbor, the glorious House of the Mosaics, the Macedonian Tomb of Eros and the Dome of Eretria. The Archaeological Museum of Eretria also worth a visit. But the modern Eretria is not only about the past. The city is very vivid especially during the summer and it is a popular tourist destination. The beautiful seaside pedestrian is full of bars, cafes, restaurants, scenic ouzo bars and taverns, where you can enjoy delicious meals by the sea. And talking about the sea, the beach of Eretria with the exotic palm trees is one of the many reasons you will love the city when you land your foot there.
