Марафонский трофей
Спустя 30 лет после исторической победы над персами (490 год до н.э.) при Марафоне победителями была возведена внушительная колонна из белого мрамора. Она называлась - Марафонский Трофей. На вершине колонны находилась скульптура Богини Победы. Возведена эта статуя была на том месте, где находился лагерь персов, и где они хоронили своих погибших. Сейчас это место называется - национальный парк Шиниас. В наши дни оригинал статуи можно увидеть в археологическом музее города Марафон. А на том месте, где Марафонский трофей был изначально установлен, находится его точная копия в натуральную величину. Рядом расположен византийский храм Панагия Месоспоритиса.

The Trophy of the Battle of Marathon
About 30 years after the historical victory of the Athenians against the Persians in the Battle of Marathon (490 BC), the winners had erected an impressive monument of white marble with an Ionic capital at the top as the basis of a statue, which was probably the Goddess Victory. This monument was located southeast of Marathon, in the Schinias Marathon National Park, as the area is called today, which was the Persian camp back then. It is believed that they had built the monument at the spot where the Persians had buried their dead, because many bones have been found at this place, irregularly arranged. Today, part of the Trophy of the Battle of Marathon is presented in the Archaeological Museum of Marathon, while a replica of it stands at its original location. Beside the replica of the Trophy there is also the Church of Panagia Mesosporitissa, a beautiful Byzantine temple with a cute detail: its wooden roof hosts bird nests. Whenever the door is closed, the birds can come and go through a loophole.

Valid for the Archaeological Museum of Marathon, the Tumulus of the Marathon Warriors and the archaeological sites of Marathon.
How to get there: By car from Athens (distance 49,3 km) via A/D Pathe / E75 / A1 and Marathons Avenue. By bus : From Athens to Agia Marina of Marathon, starting point at Mavromataion Str., Pedion tou Areos, Athens, (busline 15, bus stop Dikastiria), tel.: +30 210 88 08 082. Itineraries: Monday-Saturday: 06:00, 08:15, 12:30, 14:00, 16:30. Sunday: 06:00, 08:15, 12:00, 14:00, 15:30, 17:30. Ticket price: 4,70 euros. The journey time is approximately 120 minutes. From the Marathon Square you can go by taxi to the Schinias Marathon National Park.
