The castle of Bourtzi in Nafplion
The trademark of Nafplion is the castle of Bourtzi, which looks like it emerges from the sea. If it could talk, it could narrate a million interesting stories. It is located in the middle of the harbour of the city, a beautiful sea castle, built by the Venetians in 1473 in order to protect Nafplion from pirates and invaders from the sea. Primarily at this place there was a byzantine temple, dedicated to Saint Theodore. The strategic position of the place though was very important, and the churche gave its place to the castle. During the Greek Revolution, the Bourtzi was known as Kasteli or Thalassopyrgos (Sea Tower). The Greek goverment used it as refugee for a short time in 1826, when the rebellious nation was in civil war. It served as a fortress until 1865 and later turned into the residence of the executioners of convicts from the castle of Palamidi. From 1930 to 1970, it also served as a hotel. Since then, it is mainly a tourist attraction, hosting occasionally parts of the Summer Music Festival. You can visit Bourtzi by boat from the waterfront of Nafplion.
