Argos
If you visit Peloponnese between October and February, the fragrance of the orange and the lemon trees will lead you to Argos. Actually, the fertile Argolic plain produces annually the half of the national production in oranges -and this is just one of the many reasons that Argos deserves a visit. It is one of the most ancient cities of Greece, with history that counts 5,000 years. It is the birthplace of two of the most famous Greek mythological heroes, Hercules and Perseus. And it is like a living museum, with imposing monuments of any historical era, spread all over and around the city. Are you ready for a quick tour?

Argos, to begin with, is in the center of the largest archaeological park in the world, that includes Mycenae (10 km), Ancient Tiryntha (6 km), Nafplion (12 km), Lerna (10 km) and Epidaurus (40 km), which means that is a great basis if you want to explore the wider area. In the ancient years it was one of the most powerful and richest Mycenaean cities. The first king of Argos was Inachos, the son of Oceanus and Tethys, who had came from Egypt in 1876 BC as the leader of a large group of fugitives. However, the city was residential many centuries before that, as it is indicated by the traces of habitation dated in the end of the neolithic era (around 4000-3,500 BC) that have been found in the Aspida hill, at the northeast of the city.

Today, Argos is a modern provincial city, with high buildings, lovely neighborhoods with houses of traditional local architecture, imposing neoclassical edifices, a vivid market with numerous shops of any kind, lovely squares and a lot of cafes, bars and restaurants that will offer you local culinary delights. However, if you look around, you will see dozens of historical highlights that will draw your attention. The ancient theater of Argos, in the heart of the modern city, is one of them. Built in the early 3rd century BC, it is listed among the largest ancient Greek theaters, with a capacity of 20,000 spectators. Nowadays, it works occasionally during summer, hosting representations of ancient drama. (Ancient Theater of Argos, Tripoleos and Theatrou street, visiting hours: 8:00-15:00, free entrance). Right across the street, there is the Ancient Roman Agora, with the remnants of glorious buildings, giving us just a slight idea of the allure and the grandeur of this ancient city. (Ancient Roman Agora of Argos, Tripoleos and Theatrou street, visiting hours: 8:00-15:00, free entrance).

A few blocks away, a beautiful preserved neoclassical building of 1830, known as “Kallergeio”, houses the Archaeological Museum of Argos. The permanent collection includes remarkable findings from the Middle Helladic period until the classical times, derived from the Ancient Argos and the wider area. Among the most important exhibits are a great funerary compass, an impressive bronze armor, a crater part of the 7th century BC depicting the blinding of Polyphemus by Ulisses (Odyssey), one lyre made with turtle shell and a red-figure Attic vase by the painter Ermonaktas. In the yard of the museum, you will be amazed by the great representation of a Roman mansion’s garden that had been found in Argos, adorned by lovely mosaics. (Archaeological Museum of Argos, 2 Vasilissis Olgas street, visiting hours: 8:00-15:00, ticket price: 2 euros. The museum currently is closed due to works of maintenance).

Apart from Kallergeio however, in Argos you will see many remarkable neoclassical buildings, such as the Municipal Neoclassical Market, the Kapodistrias Barracks, the old Railway Station and the City Hall. The Municipal Neoclassical Market, built in 1888 in designs of Ernst Ziller, is one of the most beautiful neoclassical buildings of the city, declared as monument in 1974 and restored in 1989. In the past it used to house 24 shops under its wonderful arches, but nowadays only a cafe works there, while the municipal market has been transferred in another place. (Municipal Neoclassical Market, Kallergi street). Right opposite, you will see the imposing Kapodistrias Barracks, built in 1824 over the foundations of an elder Venetian building. In the past it had multiple uses, such as Hospital of the Sisters of Mercy, post office, school, shelter for refugees from Asia Minor and it had even hosted the first Panhellenic Farming Exhibition in 1899. Today it houses the Municipal Band, the Municipal Theater and the 1st Scout System, while in the outdoor area municipal cultural events are often taking place. In the next few months, you will have one more reason to visit the building, since it will house the Byzantine Museum of Peloponnese. (Kapodistrias Barracks, Fidonos street). The old Railway Station is another lovely sample of neoclassical architecture, built in 1892. It stopped working in 2010 and since then it is under re-construction. (Railway Station , 25th Martiou street and Provincial Road Argos-Araxnaio). Also wonderful is the neoclassical edifice that houses the City Hall of Argos. It is a two storey stone building of the 19th century, with an impressive hipped roof of Byzantine tiles that is supported by a parapet. It was renovated in 1987. (City Hall, Agiou Petrou square).

Argos is naturally protected at its north side by two hills. The higher hill at the northwest of the city is called Larissa Hill and its top is dominated by the notorious Castle of Argos, also known as Larissa Castle. It was built in prehistoric times. The basis of some points has boulders, which remind us of the cyclopean walls. It was rebuilt and filled in the 5th and the 6th century BC by the Argians, while significant parts of that era are preserved in the northern and western part. In the 10th century AD the Byzantines built the medieval castle, making it one of their most powerful fortifications in the region. In the 13th century, the Frankish occupied the castle and renovated it, giving it its current form, and later the Venetians replaced them (1394-1463). Then it was the Ottoman’s turn to obtain the castle, until 1822 when it was liberated by the Greeks. Unfortunately, today only the imposing external walls of the castle are still in good condition, while in its internal is completely ruined. Therefor, currently is not open to visitors.

Right under the Larissa Castle, a lovely historical monastery is perched on the rocks, known as Panagia Katakekrymmeni (Panagia on the Rocks). Built in 1715, it had been used as shelter and school in the years of the Turkish occupation, among other things. The church of the monastery is adorned with amazing icons and you will be impressed by the peculiar room layout and the remarkable religious relics.

The hill at the northeast of Argos is known as Aspida Hill. In the ancient years there was another ancient castle there, which was connected to the Larissa Castle with walls, in order to protect the city. This castle is not preserved today. Aspida in Greek means shield and there are two versions about the name of the hill. According to one, the shape of the hill resembles to a shield, according to the second, the Goddess Athina had hidden her shield in this hill. In any case, in the Aspida Hill was where the archaeologists brought to light the first traces of habitation in Argos, dated in the end of the neolithic era, as we have already mentioned. Apart from the archaeological interest, this overgrown hill is a real delight to visit and is ideal for hiking in the woods -not to mention the magnificent view to the city of Argos and the Argolic plain, the oranges’ kingdom.

How to get there: By car from Athens (distance 127 km) via Olimpia Odos/A8/E94, from Nafplio (distance 11,8 km) via National Highway Argos-Nafplio, from Corinth (distance 48,4 km) via A/D Corinth-Tripoli/A7/E65 and National Highway Corinth-Argos. By bus from Athens and many Greek cities. Kifissou Bus Station (100 Kifissou street, Athens), tel.: +30 210 51 34 588. Argos Bus Station, tel.: +30 27510 69 323.
