Ancient Theater of Argos
The Ancient Theater of Argos is listed among the largest ancient Greek theaters, with a capacity of 20,000 spectators. It was built in the early 3rd century ΒD, replacing an elder theater of the 5th century. It was probably constructed in order to host the music and drama competitions of the Nemean Panhellenic Games, which were transferred permanently to the city of Argos from the temple of Zeus at Nemea at that time. The theater also hosted political meetings, such as the Meeting of the Achaean League, which was taking place regularly during the 2nd century BC.

Placed at the foot of the southeastern side of the Larissa Hill, where the Larissa Castle was built, its position was prominent, as it was connected to the Ancient Roman Agora, was towering over the ancient city and was visible from the Argolic Gulf. At the site where the new magnificent theater was built, various elder small temples preexisted, such as those of Dioskouroi and Zeus Evvouleos, that were remained untouched.

The huge auditorium of the theater is mostly carved into the rock and was divided in two friezes into three horizontal sections and scales in four tiers, representing the tribes of Argos. The orchestra was also at the most part carved in the rock.

At the 2nd century AD, during the Roman Times and the era of the emperor Hadrian, the theater was reformed and decorated with statues, Corinthian colonnades and mosaics. They had even added a cloth over the hollow section, in order to protect the spectators from the sun and they had placed a net in front of the official seats for their safety, since at that time the theater would also host various kinds of other spectacles, such as beasts’ hunting or duels.

At the 3rd century AD, three more marble seats were added for the more official spectators, and also a small artificial lake in the orchestra, where water sports and naval representations were taking place. At the end of the 4th century AD however, the theater was abandoned, but it remained visible over the next centuries.

It was used for the first time in the modern era in July 15, 1829, for the conduction of the fourth National Assembly of the new Greek state, organized by the governor Ioannis Kapodistrias. Nowadays the Ancient Theater of Argos hosts occasionally representations of ancient drama during summer.
