Penteli’s Monastery of Assumption of Mary
Perched on the overgrown mount Penteli, the holy monastery of Assumption of Mary is one of the region’s trademarks, notorious not only for its imposing architecture but also for its great history.

It was founded in 1578 by Saint Timotheos, the former bishop of Evripos in Euboea, who had fled in Penteli as he was prosecuted by the Turks (at that time, Greece was under the Turkish occupation and according to the decree of the Sultan Selim B’, all the Christian churches should be turned into mosques. The bishop had strongly resisted to this decree, so the Turks wanted to execute him). After an adventurous trip, Saint Timotheos arrived in Penteli where he felt safe from his prosecutors, so he decided to stay there and found his own monastery. As he was looking for the proper place along with his followers, he found a white and clean human skeleton of a deceased hermit. To his bigger surprise he also noticed that there was a small icon of the Virgin Mary over the bones, at the place of the heart. Considering it as sign of divine, the Saint decided to built at this specific spot his monastery, which he dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.

In the passage of the centuries, the Monastery had a key role in the life of the Athenians, as it was always operated as a shelter for them in the years of the deadly epidemics and, later, during the Greek Independence War of 1821. According to the tradition, the underground premises of the monastery also hosted a secret school, a widespread institution during the Turkish occupancy.

Visiting today the Monastery, you will be amazed by the beautiful yard, to begin with, where you will feel serenity. The church of the monastery was rebuilt in 1953, and the only authentic remaining portion of the older church is the inner narthex which is decorated by murals of the 17th century. As for the new church, it was painted by the very known novelist and painter Fotis Kontoglou. In the Monastery’s premises there are also two chapels, the one dedicated to the Saint Timotheos, in which his scull is kept along with his personal belongings, and the other is dedicated to the Apostle Paul.

The East Wing of the Monastery is occupied by the Inter-Orthodox Center of the Church of Greece, founded in 1971, which features many guesthouses and a conference room with modern equipment. In the Monastery’s premises there are also a small museum with religious relics and a remarkable library. What definitely worth a visit, however, is the permanent exhibition hosted in the excavated underground galleries of the old monastery where the secret school operated. The theme of the exhibition is naturally the Education during the years of the Turkish occupation, and you will also see a very interesting representation of the secret school.
