Улица Афины

Как ни смешно, одна из самых известных торговых улиц Афин - это улица Афины, той самой - богини. Находится эта улица неподалеку от богемного района Псири - между печально известной своей криминальной обстановкой площадью Омония (одннако бояться ее в светлое время суток точно не стоит) и улицей Эрму. Если начать прогулку с Омонии (она находится на одноименной станции метро) и пойти по ней до Монастираки (метро Монастираки) можно увидеть массу интересного. Например, площадь Котзия, где раз в год проходит ежегодная  большая выставка книг, неподалеку - своеобразное здание городского совета “Демархио”, рядом крошечный, но имеющий собственный стиль Храм Агия Кирьяки, ну и, конечно же, мечта любого туриста - центральный рынок Афин - “Варвакиос".  

 

О магазинчиках (улица же торговая!) можно сказать одно: покупать сувениры однозначно лучше здесь! Причина проста: цены тут намного лучше чем на Плаке, а выбор не хуже. Тут же можно видеть и эмигрантские лавочки, которые приятно удивят разнообразием нелицензионной продукции - можно ничего не покупать, а просто глазеть и ностальгировать по девяностым.

One of the most famous shopping streets in the center of Athens is Athena Street, named after the Goddess Athena. It runs from the Ermou Street north to Omonoia Square through the Psiri neighborhood. The Athena Street was born from the inspiration of the two young architects Kleanthis and Schaubert, who had envisioned it as a wide, tree-lined boulevard, where the Athenians could walk, with starting point the Palace, which was in Omonoia back then, passing in front of beautiful private and public buildings and ending to the Acropolis, the Parthenon and the Propylaia. That was back in 1833. Today, the Athena Street doesn’t resemble at all to this amazing street its creators had designed, but it is still an important street of the city, with the Acropolis in the backround. Starting your walk from the Omonoia Square now (metro station Omonoia), you will pass in front of various commercial shops that sell all kind of products. You will also see the impressive Athens City Hall (63 Athena Street), surrounded by interesting architectural buildings, in front of the Square Kotzia. This square hosts annually a major book exhibition, and for a few days each time it is converted into a cultural and spiritual haunt. You will also see the beautiful small Church of Agia Kyriaki (28 Athena Street), a single aisled vaulted basilica, which was built during the Turkish Occupation. The most famous sight of the Athena Street though is the Varvakeios Market, which is the central market of the city and one of the reasons that this street is always so busy.
