Макрирахи

Деревня Макрирахи в Пелионе, расположенная неподалеку от Загоры - не совсем обычная. Она известна как “деревня цветов”. Их тут действительно немало: гардении, камелии, гортензии и магнолии растут повсюду. Летом местный клуб любителей цветов устраивает тут масштабную выставку-продажу. 

Макрирахи основана  была в период османского владычества. Свое название, котоое в переводе означает "длинный хребет", она получила из-за расположения.

Весьма привлекательной для туристов деревню делает пляж Агия Саранда, находящийся от нее всего в 3 километрах. Впрочем, есть и местные достопримечательности. Например, базилика Иоанна Крестителя, традиционно расположенная в центре мощеной площади. Есть в Макрирахи и несколько часовен поменьше. Дополняет благолепие традиционная греческая деревенская архитектура - визитная карточка всех деревень Пелиона.

It is not just one of the many beautiful villages of Pelion. Makrirachi stands out for the flowers. Also known as the “village of the flowers”, it has a long tradition in the floricultural sector. Gardenias, camellias, hydrangeas and magnolias (among others) are everywhere, filling the place with colors and fragrances. It was founded during the Ottoman period and it took its name (“Longe Ridge” in Greeks), due to its position, as it is built in the middle of a long ridge of Pelion mountain that reaches the sea. Among the many attractions of Makrirachi, you will see the basilica of St. John the Baptist, which was renovated in 1851 and features magnificent stone reliefs, the chapels of Prophet Elias, of Agion Anargyron and of St. Constantine and Helena, and also the beautiful paved square, with its picturesque taverns. It is needless to mention that the village follows faithfully the traditional local architecture and it has all kinds of accommodation for a memorable stay throughout the year. If you visit Makrirachi in the summer though, note that the beach of Agioi Saranda, which is located just 3 km away from the village, is considered the best of Pelion. Also during the summer, the Flower Association of the women of Makrirachi organizes every year an impressive flower show, where you can admire the riot of colors and fragrances and buy your favorite flowers.

 

How to get there: By car from Athens (distance 369 km) via E75, from Thessaloniki (distance 253 km) via A1 and E75, from Volos (distance 44,2 km) via National Road Portaria-Zagora. By bus: Regular daily routes from and to Volos.
