Naxos
According to the Greek mythology, the young Zeus was raised in a cave of a mountain of Naxos. This mountain was named Zas and it is the biggest of the island. Later, when Zeus’ lover, Semeli, died before their child’s birth, Zeus took the unborn baby from her womb and hid it in his thigh. When the time came, the baby was born from the thing of his father, in Naxos. He was named Dionysos, the famous God of joy and wine, and he blessed the island with fertility and grapevines. No wonder that the wines of Naxos are so fine and among the local products you should definitely taste during your visit.
Naxos is the biggest island of Cyclades and one the most popular Greek destinations every year. And not only for the wine. Being there, you will not have a dull moment. You can visit significant archaeological monuments, such as the Kouros Of Apollon, a half-finished male statue of the 6th century BC, height 10,45 meters, which is lying on the ground and represents Apollo or Dionysus. It is located in the seaside village Apollonas. Another half-finished male statue (kouros) of the 7 th century BC is located in the village Melanes. If you go to the village Livadi, just 10 km south of the Chora (the main town and port of Naxos), you will see the impressive Sanctuary of Irion, which was dedicated to Dionysus, while in the village Sangri you can visit the Temple of Dimitra, built around 530-520 BC. Both the temple and the sanctuary are considered as precusors of Parthenon. As for the Portara, the big marble gate that stands on the islet of Palaces, which is now united with the Chora, is what remains of the Temple of Apollo which was started to built in the 6th-7th century BC and was never completed. Portara is the first thing you will see, as the ship reaches the port of the island.
In Naxos you will also see many venetian towers and castles, such as the Tower of Glezos in Chora, the Tower of Bazaios 12 km from Chora, the tower of Chimaros (along with the Portara, it is the trademark of Naxos) between the mount Zas and the sea, the tower of Fragopoulos in Kourounochori, the Tower Gratsia in the village Tragea and the tower of Agia next to the namesake monastery. If you like museums, in Naxos you can visit the Archaeological Museum in Chora, the Geological Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Foklore Museum in Apeiranthos, and the archaeological site of Grota, in the north side of the port in Chora. Dozens of beautiful churches and monasteries are scattered in the island and also worth a visit.
What you will definitely enjoy in Naxos though is the beaches. Agios Prokopios (one of the best in Greece), Agia Anna (also famous, with a beautiful forest of rare cedar growing in the hot sand), Agios Georgios, Agiassos, Plaka, Pyrgaki, Kastraki (the biggest of the island, with a 3km length of white sand), to name a few. The beaches of Naxos are like paradise. And the local cuisine is also a dream. Excellent fish and seafood, fine local meat and the famous potatoes of the island, along with the good wine. What more could we add?
How to get there: By ship from the port of Piraeus. By plane via Olympic Air: State Airport of Naxos “Apollo”, Alykes, 3 km from Chora, tel.: +30 (0)22850 23969.
