Paxoi
Once upon a time, the flirtatious Neptune, the ancient Greek god of sea, threw his trident firmly in Corfu, in order to detach a part of land so he can use it as his love nest with the nereid Amphitrite. That is how the island of Paxoi was born -or at least that is the mythological version. Millenniums later, the island remains the home of the lovers, since it usually attracts couples.

They say that Paxoi is a small paradise in earth -and they are right. This gorgeous Ionian island, located between Corfu and the coasts of Epirus, is full of greenery making a fabulous contrast with the emerald sea waters.

As you approach the port, two tiny overgrown islands will welcome you at the entrance. The one is called Panagia and the other, Agios Nikolaos. In Panagia there is the namesake chapel that attracts the believers in Assumption (August 15), while in Agios Nikolaos there is the imposing Venetian Castle which was built in designs by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1423. You can visit it by boat which departs from Gaios daily at 19:00 along with a tour guide.

Gaios, the main town of Paxoi and port is a beautiful, picturesque village. Dozens of yachts ancor there daily, since Paxoi is an ideal place for a break during sailing. Romantic buildings and mansions, built according to the Ionian architecture, spring up among the vegetation admiring their reflection on the sea. Apart from the walks in the quaint narrow streets (in the Ionian islands they call them “kantounia”), in Gaios you can also visit the Museum of Paxoi, which is housed in a beautiful traditional edifice of 1906. Its exhibits reveal the island’s history, as it hosts findings from prehistory and classical years, until the time of the Balkan Wars and the Epic of 1940 (Gaios coastal zone, visiting hours 11:00-13:00 and 19:30-22:30).

Other places you can visit in Paxoi are the Magazia, a peaceful village surrounded by vast olive groves just 3 km from Gaios, the Loggos, a charming fishing village with a small port full of fishing boats, stone buildings, colorful windows, old mills in the surrounding hills and hundrends of pines and olive trees in the background (5,5 km north of Gaios), and Lakka, the favorite anchorage for sailors and yachts, as it is built inside a closed bay with wonderful emerald waters (8 km north of Gaios).

And what about the beaches of Paxoi? Oh well, you can choose  between white sand and pebbles. In both cases, the perfect crystal clear waters and the lush green nature is the common denominator. Plakes, Second Spiatza, Paxos Beach and Monodendri are just a breath away from Gaios, Kipos, Kipiadi, Marmari and Levrechio (all with pebbles) are close to Loggos, while the sandy Charami and Kanoni are located near Lakka.

Paxoi is a rather quiet place. If you expect to live nights of wild fun here, better think again, but you can definitely find a few bars where you can enjoy your drink, after your delicious meals in the dozens taverns and fish taverns of the island. After all, after a rather busy day (endless hours of fun in the fabulous beaches, trekking in the overgrown trails which are spread in Paxoi among the notorious olive groves, or even the round of the island by rent boat, in order to discover places of unique beauty), you will probably want to relax a bit at nights to recover your energy for the next day.

How to get there: Daily by ferry boat from Igoumenitsa (by car from Athens via E65, distance 449 km) or Corfu (Igoumenitsa port, tel.: +30 26650 24 090, Corfu port, tel.: +30 26613 65 200 / 26610 30 481, Paxoi port, tel.:  +30) 26620  32 269.
