Foinikounta
The truth is that the west-south Peloponesse is full of wonderful seaside villages. One of them is Foinikounta. Framed by the two “castle-cities” of Messenia, Methoni and Koroni, washed by the Messenian Gulf and surrounded by lash greenery, Foinikounta is ideal for quiet relaxing holiday, away from the stress of the city.

There are two versions about the origin of the name Foinikounta. According to some, it was settlement of the Phoenicians (ancient Semitic thalassocratic civilization). According to others, the name derives from the ancient Greek word “foinikoun” which means “purple”, the color produced by the processing of the “purpura” shellfish in antiquity. In any case, Foinikounta was there since the prehistoric times (even Pausanias, the Greek traveler and geographer of the 2nd century AD, mentions the place as a natural port), however it never seemed to develop any significant civilization.

Foinikounta is appeared again in the map in the modern Greek history, in 1840-1850, when it was inhabited by immigrants from Crete. Today it is a beautiful, quiet village, with traditional houses, lots of accommodations, taverns, a few bars and the namesake magical sandy beach with the crystal clear blue waters. This beach, after all, is the number one reason to pick Foinikounta for your vacations. However, if you are not too bored to drive around, you can also find more wonderful beaches in the region, such as the Mavrovouni (a huge sandy, super organized beach, next to Foinikounta), the beaches Lampes Koronis (sandy, popular, with crystal clear waters) and Lampes Methonis (also beautiful, but more quiet), both in the road between Foinikounta and Methoni, and the beaches Loutsa and Tsapi, two amazing sandy beaches, very  close to Foinikounta.
