Fish A La Spetsiota”. Spetses
Once upon a time, Spetses was connected to the opposite Argolic coast with a narrow strip of land, at the site of the today’s Kosta. That was about 10,000 years ago, when the first people inhabited the island (around 8,000 BC). Since then, a thousand things had happened making Spetses known in the pages of history and leading us to today. And today, Spetses is one of the most lovely islands of the Argosaronic Gulf and among the most popular touristic destinations in Greece. Why? Well, the stately mansions, the beautiful courtyards, the quaint narrow streets, the picturesque churches, the big squares paved with pebbles and the traditional carts (no cars are allowed within the town) are quite satisfactory reasons, to begin with. The rich cultural and artistic activity, the great history, the cosmopolitan air and the intense nightlife complete the picture of an island that rightly attracts thousands of tourists every year.

The island has two ports. The new port is in Ntapia, the center of the town of Spetses, where the ferry boats bring the visitors. The old port is at the east of the town and it was the starting point of the sailboats of the past that crossed the Black Sea, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, bringing wealth to Spetses. In current days, the old port is the favorite anchorage of the luxurious yachts and the heart of the nightlife of Spetses, where dozens of bars and clubs are open until the early hours.

Spetses has great naval and shipowning tradition, of course. It is also the island where the notorious Greek heroine of the Greek Revolution of 1821, Laskarina Bouboulina, acted. Her origin was from Hydra, but the mighty Boouboulina chose Spetses as her seat in order to fight for the liberation of her country, forming an army of Spetsians (whom she called “my brave lads”) and a fleet, at her own expenses. Her action and her assistance in the Revolution was so important, that the Russians allies bestowed her the title of Admiral, something unthinkable for a woman even today. Her home is now a museum. This amazing mansion, built more than 300  years ago by a Mauritanian architect, has been declared as preserved historical monument since 1925. The last two decades it opens its gates to the people who want to take a look in the  rooms where the Greek heroine lived. Apart from the luxurious furniture, what you will also see are maps, chests, a model that
represents her flagship, “Agamemnon”, various other artifacts of historical importance and her personal belongings, such as her scarf and her pendant. The tour guide lasts 40 minutes. (Bouboulina’s Museum, Ntapia, Spetses. Open in July and August. Times of tours: Morning:  9:45, 10:30, 11:15, 12:00, 12:45, 13:30, 14:15. Afternoon: 15:45, 16:30, 17:15, 18:00, 18:45, 19:30, 20:15. Ticket prices: Adults: 6 euros. Students: 4 euros. Children (6 to 18 years): 2 euros. Maximum number of visitors per guide is 35 adults).

Talking about museums, another interesting option is the Spetses’ Museum, which is located about 700 meters from the Bouboulina’s Museum. Its exhibits represent more than 500 years of the cultural life of the island, such as coins from various  periods, religious icons, pottery from the 18th century, relics from the Revolution of 1821 (weapons, documents, Bouboulina’s bones, the Revolution’s Flag etc.) and also artifacts of the everyday life of the Spetsians (costumes, handwork, furniture). The museum is housed in the wonderful traditional mansion of Hadjigiannis Mexis, built between 1795 and 1798. (Spetses Museum, Ntapia, Spetses. Visiting hours: 8:00-15:00. Closed on Mondays. Ticket prices: 3 euros, 2 euros).

If you prefer the sandy beaches, you will probably feel disappointed, cause in Spetses you will see only pebbles. Nevertheless, the waters are crystal clear, the landscapes are beautiful and the choices are plenty, such as the beaches of Agia Marina, Agios Nikolaos, Agios Mamas, Kounoupitsa, Kouzounos, Xylokeriza, Agioi Anargyroi, Agia Paraskevi, Zogeria, Ligoneri, Vrellos and Bithistamna. You can visit them by car, local bus or even boats that depart from the new port.

Spetses is famous for the macaroons (you should try them for sure), while the local specialty is the notorious “Fish A La Spetsiota”. As souvenirs, you can buy beautiful decorative pottery. If you visit the island in September, you will have the chance to attend to “Armata”, the bright celebrations that last a week and are organized in commemoration of the historical naval battle of Spetses (September 8, 1822).

How to get there: By ferry boat from Piraeus (the trip lasts about 4.30 hours and makes stops to all the islands of the Saronic Gulf). By flying dolphin from Piraeus (the trip lasts 2 hours). Hellas Flying Dolphins (Piraeus), tel.: +30 210 41 99 000, (Spetses), tel.: +30 22980 73 141-2. Saronic Dolphins (Piraeus), tel.: +30 210 42 24 777, (Spetses), tel.: +30  22980 72 107.
