Elafonisi
It is the most exotic beach of Crete (and one of the most beautiful of the world in general). Being something between an island and a peninsula, Elafonisi is a place of unique natural beauty, located at the southwest edge of the prefecture of Chania.

Sand hills and cedars are spread in the vast white beach, which is also adorned by black small rocks and white lilies, making a wonderful contradiction. As for the waters, they are transparent, with an amazing turquoise color. What happened here is that the sea has covered the biggest part of the peninsula, creating a sea lake with shallow waters. At the opposite coast, a small sandy island is waiting for you to visit it, walking in the sea. Actually you will see more people walking than swimming, but that is one of the many charms of the place that reminds a natural playground for both children and adults.

In the past, this small magical island was a pirates’ shelter where they hid their loots. That is how it took its name after all, which initially was Lafonisi (island of loots).
Elafonisi is included in the NATURA program, mainly because it is one of the places where the sea turtles Caretta-Caretta leave their eggs. For this reason, it is strictly forbidden for the visitors to cut plants or even take grains of sand with them as souvenirs. However, you can take as many photos as you like, to remember this fabulous beach. It will be the best souvenir of all.

Important tip: Although a part of the beach is fully organized, make sure that you will have a sea umbrella and a mat to spread on the sand, in case  you won’t find any free sunbed. After all, Elafonisi is extremely popular.

About 5 km before you reach Elafonisi, you will meet the picturesque Monastery of Chrysoskalitissa, which is built on a rock and is one of the most important monuments of the West Crete. Chrysoskalitissa means something like “Virgin Mary on a golden stair”. The imposing icon of the Virgin Mary, that you can see in the small church of the Monastery, was painted 1,000 years ago, as it is said.

How to get there: By car from Chania (distance 79,3 km) via EO Kissamou Chanion/VOAK/E65/EO90 and Provincial Road Kaloudianon-Chrisoskalitissas, from Palaiochora (distance 51,3 km) via Provincial Road Kaloudianon-Chrisoskalitissas. By boat from Palaiochora.
