Voulgareli
Voulgareli is a beautiful mountainous village of Tzoumerka, one of the traditional paradises of the area, that are hidden behind the firs waiting to be discovered by the travellers. After a magical journey in the overgrown Tzoumerka, crossing forests, canyons, craggy mountains and lovely villages, Voulgareli looks like a bonus gift, perched at an altitude of 800 meters.

The traditional houses spring up among the trees, framing the small roads that lead to the square. This square was inaugurated in 1905 and the legend has it that the habitants danced that day till the wee hours, in order to smooth its earthen floor. Today the square is paved, but always under the shadow of the plain trees and still the place where the villagers gather to celebrate their big events. Talking about legends, there is another one about the two stone fountains that adorn Voulgareli. They say that if a visitor drinks water from there, then he will definitely marry one of the girls of the village. So, be careful what you drink...

Apart from the natural and the architectural beauty, Voulgareli is also known as a key village in the Greek uprisings against the Turks first and the Germans later. In the historic  monastery of Agios Georgios, just 1 km from Voulgareli, was where the Greek revolutionaries declared the war to the Ottoman empire in the region of Arta (May 30, 1821). Many decades later, in the years of the German occupancy, the Greek Resistance chose Voulgareli as their headquarters in Epirus, making it the first capital of the liberated mountainous Greece.  In retaliation, the Germans burned down Voulgareli in 1943 and killed 13 villagers. Among the buildings that were burned down there was the church of Agios Nickolaos in the village’s square. The church was rebuilt however in 1951-52 and today ii is the jewel of the square.

Talking about jewels, the Byzantine Red Church, just 4 km from Voulgareli, is one of the places you should definitely visit, as it is an excellent sample of religious Byzantine art, situated in a location of indescribable natural beauty.

It is needless to say that Voulgareli with the great history and the countless beauties is a popular mountainous destination throughout the year, where you can find plenty of accommodations and taverns offering local delicacies. So, what are you waiting for?

How to get there: By car from Arta (distance 63,4 km) via National Highway Arta-Trikala/E030, from Ioannina (distance 85,5 km) via Provincial Road Arta-Ioannina, from Trikala (distance 95,9 km) via National Highway Arta-Trikala/E030.
