Limni
In English Limni means Lake. By the name of the village you may think that it is built next to a lake. Actually Limni is built by the sea, but in a closed and so windless bay, that the sea waters are as calm and waveless as a lake’s ones. Located in the North Euboea, Limni is one of these picturesque seaside villages you will love instantly. The houses are cute and colorful, following in majority the neoclassical style. And as it happens in the whole North Euboea, the location is overgrown, making the attractive combination of green (of the trees) and blue (of the sea). For all these reasons, Limni is a very popular touristic destination.

The heart of the village beats in the lovely coastal road which is always full of people who enjoy their walk, before they choose one of the dozens of cafes, ouzo taverns and taverns that are lined up in front of the sea.

The namesake beach of the village is beautiful but rather small. If you do mind to tour a bit in the area though, you will discover a variety of amazing beaches. You can even swim in the frozen waters of a real lake, formed by the waterfalls of the village Drimonas, about 25 km from Limni, and enjoy a unique experience in a wonderful location.

If you want to know more about the history and the tradition of Limni, do not miss to visit its Historical and Folklore museum, that is housed in a beautiful neoclassical mansion of 1880. Its very interesting permanent collection, apart from the authentic traditional furniture that travel us back to time and the fine samples of folklore art, also includes an archaeological collection with artifacts fount during  the archaeological excavations in the wider region (Visiting hours: 9:00-14:00, tel.: +30 22270 31 335).

Also interesting is the permanent Costume Collection of Andreas Papageorgiou. It is housed in the beautiful family house  which was built in 1895. This amazing collection includes more  than 250 costumes, covering the last two hundred years of traditional life of Greek society (from 1770/1780 to 1960/1970) and represents a wide geographical area between the East and the West, such as Asia Minor, Eastern Thrace and the villages of Ebro, Lefkada, Peloponnese, Northern Epirus, Lesvos, Karpathos and Kastelorizo (visiting hours:  10:30-13:00 and 17:00-19:00, tel.: +30 6946 23 89 80).

About 10 km from Limni you can visit the historic Byzantine convent Galataki, founded in the 7th century. The convent is dedicated to the Saint Nickolaos, the patron of the sailors. There are two versions about the origin of the convent’s name. According to one theory, Galatakis was the name of a captain, who miraculously survived from a shipwreck in the sea waters under the convent, in the 10th century. The captain was sure that Saint Nickolaos had saved him, so he rebuilt the monastery and spent  the rest of his life as monk. According to another theory, the convent took its name from the dairy herds who lived in the area (galataki in English means milk). In any case, the monastery is beautiful and worth a visit. Let alone the breathtaking view you will enjoy from there and the lovely namesake beach that extends  under the convent. (Visiting hours: 8:00-12:00 and 14:00-17:00, tel.: +30 22270 31 489).
