Амфилохия
Когда-то существовало целых пять древних городов, входящих в регион под названием Амфилохия. В двух километрах от современной Амфилохии находился древний город Лимнея, который считался важнейшим в регионе из-за своего стратегического положения. Город нередко подвергался нападениям и погромам со стороны спартанцев, а в последствии и македонцев во многом из-за отсутствия укреплений. Крепость тут появилась лишь во времена Византии, которая достраивалась венецианцами. Ее останки можно наблюдать в восточной части
Амфилохии. Не менее интересный объект - подземный ход от цитадели до основания холма к сожалению был засорен во время бомбежек в 1944 году.
Столицей Древней Амфилохии был город Амфилохико Аргос, основанный до V века н.э.. Останки крепостных стен города сохранились. Они находятся у холма в поселке Кенургио, примерно в 13 км к северо-востоку от современной Амфилохии. Другой древний город, Олпес расположен в 2 км от руин Амфолохиго Аргоса. По свидетельству Финикида тут располагались здания судов Акарнарийцев. Тут же были найдены останки древних храмов. Совсем недалеко от Олпеса располагался еще один город Древней Амфилохии - Кринес. Он был укреплен наиболее хорошо и
останки древней крепости можно увидеть и сейчас. Располагаются они совсем близко к магистрали Амфилохия-Янина (у Палиафли). И последний город древнего государства под названиемнаходится в 8,5 километрах от современной Амфилохии. Помимо древней крепости тут можно увидеть останки микенских гробниц. Надо отметить, что археологические раскопки тут по большому счету еще не велись, так что в будущем вполне возможны сенсации.
Несмотря на то что большинство построек (не самых красивых) в Амфилохии появилось в 70 годах прошлого века, тут по-прежнему можно увидеть старые классические дома. Глядя на них невольно задумываешься о том каким красивым местом могла бы быть Амфилохия - будь местные жители более консервативными в своих архитектурных пристрастиях. Что до пляжей, то вы найдете целых два, причем организованных, прямо в городской черте. Также на набережной немало таверн и кафе - местный променад самое популярное место в Амфилохии.

Amfilochia
Built in two neighboring hills, it surrounds the Ambracian Gulf, combining mountain and sea. This picturesque seaside town of the prefecture of Aetolia-Acarnania is also blessed with great history. Are you ready for a short trip back to time?
Once upon a time, there were five ancient cities in the wider region of Amfilochia, which composed the state of Ancient Amfilochia. About 2 km from the today’s city, there was the ancient Limnaia, a very important city of the region due to its strategic position, as it was the natural bridge between Aetolia-Acarnania and Epirus. First the Spartans and later the Macedonians had passed from Limnaia, plundering it, since the peaceful habitants did not have the foresight to fortify the city. However, a powerful castle was built later, which started to be inhabited during the Byzantine and Venetian era. Today, parts of the walls are still preserved at the east side of Amfilochia, a great reminder of a great ancient city. Even the ancient underground passage, that leaded from the citadel to the base of the hill, is still preserved, although the entrance is closed by debris, after the Germans bombed the town in 1944.
The capital of the state of Ancient Amfilochia was the Amfilochiko Argos, a colony of Argos, founded before the 5th century BC. Parts of the ancient walls of the citadel are still preserved, while the first excavations brought to light tombs and coins, dated from the 4th to the 2nd century BC. The ruins of the ancient city are located in a low hill, in Kainourgio, about 13 km northeast of Amfilochia.
The Ancient Olpes is located 2 km from the ruins of the Amfilochiko Argos. According to Thucydides in this city there were the ancient walled courts of the public of Acarnanians. Foundations of temples and buildings have been found so far in this archaeological site. Just a breath away from Olpes, there was another city, the Krines. Due to its strategic position, viewing the Ambracian Gulf, it is believed that the role of the city was to protect the rest of the state of Ancient Amfilochia. The ancient walls are still preserved and worth a visit, since the view from there is outstanding (it is very close to the National Highway Amfilochia - Ioannina, in the position “Paliafli”). The fith ancient city is located about 8,5 km west of the today’s Amfilochia and its name was Belichriniassa. Walls of an ancient castle, an ancient circular tank and many tombs (a glorious Mycenean one among them) are the so far archaeological finds. We should mention at
this point that all five ancient cities have not been excavated yet by the archaeologists, so the current ruins are probably an appetizer before the main dish.
Like the Ancient Limnaia that was built at this site, the today’s Amfilochia remains the natural bridge between Aetolia-Acarnania and Epirus. Actually it is an important road junction of the West Greece, since the drivers who direct from South and Central Greece to Epirus, Lefkada and Corfu will definitely pass through Amfilochia. Although high (and rather ugly) buildings were built during the 70’s at the site of the beautiful quaint houses of the past, some Amfilochian neighbors still retain their old picturesque color, giving us an idea of how much more beautiful this town could be, if the habitants were more faithful to their traditional architecture. Nevertheless, Amfilochia is indeed beautiful, especially in the summer evenings, when the color of the sea turns into a wonderful grey-green. According to the scientists, this phenomenon is due to overcrowding plankton. In any case, the view is magical and dozens of people choose this time of the
day to walk along the beautiful promenade.
As a seaside town, Amfilochia has two organized beaches, ideal for swimming in the blue waters of the Ambracian Gulf, while the imposing eucalyptus trees fill out the necessary shadow offered by the sea umbrellas. Dozens of quaint taverns are lined up in front of the sea, at the opposite site of the road, ready to offer you fresh fish and tasty local dishes. It is needless to say that the town has plenty of accommodations to offer you a pleasant stay. So, if you happen to drive through Amfilochia in order to go to another destination, make sure that you will also have some days to spend in this lovely town.
