The Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” is the primary civilian airport that serves the city of Athens and the region of Attica and is the major hub and base of Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air. It was named after the great Greek statesman Eleftherios Venizelos.  It began its operation on March 29, 2001, replacing the International Airport Ellinikou which had been serving all flights from and to Athens since many decades. The new airport is located in Spata and it is a huge building that fulfills all modern requirements, serving almost 13 million passengers annually. As of late 2011, the “Eleftherios Venizelos” is the thirtieth busiest airport in Europe. Among the other facilities (duty free shops, restaurants and cafes), the Athens International Airport features a small museum, which is the best way to welcome the passengers to the glorious history of Athens.  In a specially designed area of 200 sq. m. the permanent exhibition presents the archaeological finds that were revealed during the airport’s construction, including 172 artifacts dated from the Neolithic and Early Helladic period until the post-Byzantine period (Building of the Main Terminal, Departures Level , Entrance 3. Visiting Hours: Monday to Sunday, 6:00 to 23:00). At the Departures Level in the Building of the Main Terminal you can also visit the permanent exhibition for Eleftherios Venizelos, which presents a series of photographs that highlight the most important events of his life and reflects the political experience and legacy of this emblematic figure in the modern Greek history. Another interesting permanent exhibition of the airport is the one which is dedicated to Acropolis in collaboration with the Acropolis Museum, giving you the ideal introduction of one of the most important monuments in the world.
