Дружеский круг Эль Греко
В этом году во всем мире отмечается 400 лет со дня смерти великого греческого художника Доменикоса Теотокопулоса (1541 - 1614), более известного под именем Эль Греко. Родился он в Греции, на острове Крит, который тогда был частью венецианской республики и центром поствизантийского искусства. Оттуда он переехал в Венецию, а затем в Испанию, в город Толедо, где жил и работал до самой смерти. Греческое происхождение художника явилось причиной того, что 2014 год здесь объявлен годом Эль Греко. В это связи в Афинах проходят сразу три выставки. Одна из них, под названием “Дружеский круг Эль Греко в Толедо” проходит в главном здании Музея Бенаки. Посвящена она всем тем, кто поддерживал художника (в том числе материально) и служил ему вдохновением в “испанский период” его жизни. Собственно - это портреты всех этих людей кисти великого художника из коллекции Музея Прадо. Также представлены книги того времени и прочие артефакты связанные с жизнью художника. Экспонаты были предоставлены уже упомянутым Музеем Прадо, национальной библиотекой Испании, архивом города Толедо, библиотекой Кастилья Ла Манча и другими институциями.

Exhibition: The Friendly Cycle of Greco in Toledo
Domenikos Theotokopoulos (1541 – April 7, 1614) was a great painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. He was born in Crete, the beautiful island of Greece, which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice, and the center of the Post-Byzantine art. He moved to Venice and later to Toledo in Spain, where he lived and worked until his death. He became famous as “El Greco” (“The Greek”) and his unique paintings will remain in eternity for their perfection and art. On the occasion of the 400 years after his death (1614-2014), the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sport declared the year 2014 as the year El Greco. For this reason, the Museum Benaki honors the sublime artist with the exhibition “The Friendly Cycle of Greco in Toledo”, which is presented in the main building of the museum. The aim of the exhibition is to make known and honored the intellectuals, the collectors and the patrons who were part of the personal cycle of El Greco in Toledo, and who were the ones who inspired and supported him throughout the phase of his creative life. The exhibition includes two of the most important portraits painted by El Greco (from the collections of the Museo del Prado), and also other paintings, rare books, manuscripts and prints of the 16th and 17th century which are stored in the National Library of Spain, in the Archives of Toledo (Archivo Municipal de Toledo, Archivo Provincial de Toledo, Biblioteca de Castilla-La Mancha), and other institutions (Museo del Greco, Archivo Historico de Protocolos de Madrid) which willingly agreed to lend their treasures.
