Среднеэлладское кладбище в Марафоне
Совсем недалеко от Марафонского археологического музея находится одно из самых важных древних кладбищ Аттики среднеэлладского периода (2000-1600 годы до н.э.). Оно состоит из семи курганов, четыре из которых были исследованы археологом Спиросом Маринатосом в 1970-72 годах. Именно тогда были обнаружены артефакты представленные в наши дни в местном археологическом музее. Два захоронения получили название “Братья-близнецы” из-за того, что имели одинаковую высоту и диаметр. Другие два были частично повреждены. Недавние исследования показали, что в северной части кладбища располагались другое, еще более древнее кладбище. Сейчас древние могилы располагаются под специальным навесом, посетители могут их рассматривать с моста. В нескольких километрах от Враны, в Тсепи находится еще одно древнее кладбище. Это кладбище, расположившиеся у подножия небольшой горы Котрони, датируется доисторическим периодом (3200-2000 годы до н.э.). Многочисленные находки указывают на то, что кладбище, которое так же было исследовано Спиросом Маринатосом, использовалось выходцами с кикладских островов. Вероятно, они переселились в Аттику, как принято выражаться, для ведения бизнеса. К сожалению, эти раскопки для посещения в данный момент недоступны.
Часы работы: вторник-воскресенье 8:30-15:00 (зимой), 8:00-15:00 (летом), понедельник - выходной.
Цена билета: 3 евро, 2 евро - льготный. По этому билету также можно посетить археологический музей.

Middle Helladic tumuli in Vrana
Very close to the archaeological museum of Marathon, in Vrana, there are the remnants of one of the most important ancient cemeteries of the area, dated back to the Middle Helladic period (2000-1600 BC). It consists of seven burial mounds, four of which were investigated by the archaeologist Sp. Marinatos (1970-1972) and brought to light vases and gems that are exposed in the Museum of Marathon. The first two excavated tombs were called “twin brothers”, because they have the same height and girth. The third was damaged by the two thirds and the Tomb IV was damaged by the half. Recent research showed that in the north side of the cemetery there were earlier burials in cist graves outside the tombs. Today the area is covered by a modern housing, while visitors have the opportunity to follow a specific path through the iron overhead bridge which is located around the tombs. A few kilometers away, in Tsepi, another ancient cemetery has been found, located on the edge of the plain of Marathon, at the foot of the small mountain Kotroni. This cemetery is dated back to the Prehistoric Period (3200-2000 BC), and it was excavated also by Sp. Marinatos. The numerous finds from the tombs show that this cemetery was used by residents of the Cyclades islands, who had settled in Athens for commercial reasons. Unfortunately this area is not available for visits.

How to get there: By car from Athens (distance 43,7 km) via Α/Δ ΠΑΘΕ/E75/Α1 and Marathonos Avenue. By bus : From Athens to Agia Marina of Marathon, starting point at Mavromataion Str., Pedion tou Areos, Athens, (busline 15, bus stop Dikastiria), tel.: +30 210 88 08 082. Itineraries: Monday-Saturday: 06:00, 08:15, 12:30, 14:00, 16:30. Sunday: 06:00, 08:15, 12:00, 14:00, 15:30, 17:30. Ticket price: 4,70 euros. The journey time is approximately 120 minutes and the bus station in Marathon is 2 km away from the archaeological site.
