The castle of Chalkida
Among the many things you can see and do while you’re visiting Chalkida, do not also miss to pay a visit to the castle of this beautiful city. Built in a strategic position on the Fourka hill over the Boeotian coast, the castle Karababa controlled the Strait of Euripus and Chalkida. The hill was first fortified probably during the Roman period, and according to some scholars, the castle occupies the site of the ancient city Kanithou, as sporadic traces of buildings and graves were found on the ground surface.  The preserved castle is a Turkish fortification of 1684, in order to protect Chalkida by the Venetians. The only well-preserved building within the precincts today is a temple dedicated to the Prophet Elias, dating to 1895. Outside the castle, there is the distinctive monument of the novelist, poet and playwright Giannis Skarimpas (1893-1984). The view of the city from the castle Karababa is panoramic and you can also admire from there the impressive bridge that connects Chalkida with the rest of Greece.
The Castle Karababa, Chalkida, Euboea. Visiting hours: Closed on Mondays. Tuesday-Sunday: 8:00-16:00. Free entrance.
