The Park of Souls
At the top of the mountain of Parnitha in Athens, 2 kilometers before the casino, a beautiful and eerie place awaits. It is the famous Park of Souls, where art meets history. This place was once a forest, destroyed by the great fire of 2007. Opposite of this place there is an abandoned building that was once a sanatorium in where patients with tuberculosis were hospitalized -among them there was the great Greek poet Yannis Ritsos, who had written there his first comprehensive collection of poems titled Spring Symphony (1938). Rumor has it that the building is haunted by the souls of those patients, who used to go out for a walk in the –now  burnt- forest to breath fresh air. In 2012, the Greek artist Spyros Ntasiotis decided to restore life to the place and honor the history of the sanatorium. So he made twenty impressive sculptures using burnt wood, expressing the feelings and the pain of those patients. The names of his works are characteristics: The Mercy, The Grief, The Prayer, The Supplication, The Despair… All sculptures have a height of 2.5 to 4.5 meters. The work was done selflessly, only with the personal toil, passion and love of the artist. The Park of Souls is a wild and magical place and it will forever engraved in your memory.

How to get there: By car, from Athens via Attiki Odos, exit 8 (direction to Lamia), turning right to the next exit (Parnitha-Metamorfosis-Acharne), in order to go up the bridge. When you see the traffic lights, turn left and follow the sign to Mount Parnitha. You will pass in front of the taverns of Parnitha and on the cross road Holy Trinity (Agia Trida), you will turn right following the signs to the Casino. The Park of Souls is 2km before the Casino.
