Ancient Tiryns
In the road that connects Nafplion with Argos, there is a low hill that is listed in the Monuments of the World’s Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. This hill was continuously inhabited from the Neolithic Age to the late Antiquity and is dotted with the remnants of a glorious city of the past. The city’s name was Tiryns.

It is believed that mythical founder of Tiryns was the Argean prince Proitos, who had fled to Lycia after his conflict with his brother Akrisios. When he returned, he brought with him the Cyclopes who built the imposing walls of the city. The name of Tiryns is also connected with the names of great mythical heroes such as Bellerophon, Perseus and Hercules.

According to the findings, it seems that Tiryns was first inhabited in the Neolithic period (7th-4th millennium BC), while the oldest architectural remnants date back to the Early Bronze Age (3rd millennium BC). In the second phase of the Early Helladic Era (2700-2200 BC) it is believed that at the top of the hill an important populated community had been organized around a magnificent circular building with a diameter of 27 meters. Tiryns really bloomed, however, during the late Bronge Age, in the Mycenean period (1600-1050 BC), when the hill began to be fortified gradually with the notorious Cyclopean walls, that enclosed the palace complex and other buildings used mainly by the ruling class as places of worship, warehouses and workshops, as well as housing.

In the end of the 13th century BC, a powerful earthquake caused severe damages to the walls and the palace, which was destroyed completely by the following fire. As a result, the palace system of governance also collapsed. In the 12th century BC, a large settlement with urban fabric was organized in the plain in front of the half ruined Citadel. However the decline of Tiryns was inevitable.

During the historical times, although Tiryns seemed to keep being an organized political community, it could not compete with Argos, which finally destroyed the city in the first half of the 5th century and exiled its inhabitants. In the 2nd century AD, when the famous geographer and traveler Pausanias visited the place, Tiryns was already abandoned. Over the next centuries the once upon a time strong city would be buried under the soil and would be totally forgotten.

It was in 1876 when Heinrich Schliemann discovered the lost city and the first archaeological excavations began, bringing to light what the soil, the time and the memory had buried. Visiting the archaeological site of the Ancient Tiryns today, the remnants of the monuments that will really impress you are the West Rampart, that is an outstanding achievement of Mycenaean architecture with clearly defensive character, the Lower Citadel and the Geometric Temple, which was probably built in the Geometric Era and was dedicated to Hera.
