Skiathos
It is the cosmopolitan island of the Sporades complex, a genuine paradise with dense vegetation, dreamy beaches and intense nightlife. No wonder that Skiathos is listed among the most popular destinations in Greece.

The island was named Skiathos by the first inhabitans, the Pelasgians, in the pre-Hellenistic period, because of the valuable shadow (“σκιά” in Greeks) of the hundrends of its trees. The homonymous city of Skiathos  is the only settlement of the island and will amaze you with its magnificent neoclassical buildings and the beautiful white houses with the lush gardens. It is a relatively new city,  built around 1829-1830 in the place of the ancient city(which was built around 800 BC), and is washed by a sheltered bay. Walking in the picturesque narrow streets, near the east beach of the city, you will meet The House Of Papadiamantis. Built in 1860, this beautiful two-storeys house was the place where the significant Greek novelist Alexandros Papadiamantis was raised and died. Nothing had changed in the interior decoration since then, so apart from the fact that a great spiritual figure lived there, it is also a good chance for you to get familiar
with a typical island house of the past.

From the city of Skiathos you can also visit Bourtzi, a surrounded by greenery peninsula which separates the natural port of the island in two. In the past it was a fortress, built in 1211 AD, fortified with ramparts, while on the right and the left of the gate there were two round towers. The fortress was destroyed by the Venetians in 1660. Today only a few ruins remind us the past of this place, which is worth a visit anyway: Hundreds of green pines, magical view, an amazing summer theater and a municipal cafe in front of the bay, which often hosts special nights, are more than enough reasons for someone to go to Bourtzi.

In the north side of Skiathos there is the Castle of the island, also known as the Medieval City.
At this naturally fortified peninsula the residents of Skiathos had fled in order to protect themselves from the frequent pirate raids. They lived there from 1350 AD till 1830.  Today what remains from this medieval city are only four churches, a part of the wall with the gate, the spectacular terrace with the scalding, a half ruined mosque and some ruins  of the Turkish Government House. Two water tanks and a cannon are also preserved. The Castle is one of the most significant sights of Skiathos, combining the wild natural beauty with the great history.

As for the beaches, Skiathos features some of the best of Greece. Take for example the Lalaria, in the northeast side of the island, with the white steep rocks and the blue-green waters, which is listed among the most beautiful Greek beaches. Or Koukounaries, in the southwest Skiathos, which offers the most fabulous sunsets you have ever seen. Vasilias, Megali Ammos, Kalamaki, Vromolimnos, Banana and Xanemos are also a few of the many gorgeous beaches you will find in Skiathos.

Besides the endless swimming and sunbathing, Skiathos can also suggest you many other activities to keep you busy during the day. It is the only North Aegean Island which offers 25 different trekking routes, of total length 197 km, crossing landscapes of unique natural beauty and exploring the historical sites of the island (info: +30 6972 705 416, e- mail: widmann@otenet.gr). If you like diving, the exploration of the magical seabed of Skiathos is one of the experiences you must not miss, even if you are not a trained diver (info: +30 6977 081 444). And what about horse riding? The Group of Equestrian Sports of North Sporades organizes twice a month super horsemanship excursions in beautiful places of the island (info: +30 6985 011 051).
