Элафонниси
Элафонисси - это совсем небольшой остров площадью 19 кв. километров, который расположился неподалеку от побережья Лаконии, рядом с Пелопоннесом. Он считается одним из самых популярных направлений в этом регионе. Главная причина - удивительные чистые песчаные пляжи Лаконийского залива, омывающего остров!
Название острова в переводе с греческого означает “остров оленей”. Однако, в наши дни оленей здесь не встретить - зато в древние времена их тут было предостаточно и это было любимое место охотников. Вот почему немало святилищ Артемиды, богини охоты, располагалось в этом регионе.
По мнению историков Элафонниси не всегда был островом. Раньше это был полуостров и назывался он “Оноу Гнатос”, что в переводе означает - ослиная челюсть. Вероятно из-за своей формы. Примерно в VI веке до н.э. регион подвергся сильнейшему землетрясению и именно тогда ушел под землю древний город Павлопетри, а Элафонниси стал островом. Павлопетри был важным морским портом, а проплывая на пароме к острову его останки можно увидеть под водой.
Хотя Элафонниси и считается местом археологических раскопок, туристы по большей части прибывают сюда ради изумительных пляжей. Самый известный из них, Симос, располагается в южной части острова и считается одним из красивейших в Средиземном море. Многовековые дубы, кажущаяся бесконечной песчаная полоса и вид на остров Китера - все это делает пляж уникальным. Совсем неподалеку, в 50 метрах от пляжа находится кемпинг, где можно остановиться с палаткой. Пляж Панагия в западной части острова из-за богатой флоры идеально подходит для подводного плавания. Также в западной части Элафонисси находится другой пляж - Лефки. Среди прочих хороши - Кодогони, Калогерас и Аглифтис.
Неподалеку от порта вы найдете множество кафе и таверн. Однако, на бурную ночную жизнь тут рассчитывать не приходится. Впрочем, может оно и к лучшему - для полного слияния с природой ночные клубы вряд ли нужны.

Elafonisos
A tiny island of 19 square kilometers, just a breath away from the south Laconic coast, is one of the most popular summer destinations of the region. No wonder why... Elafonisos is like a small paradise in Earth. Picturesque, washed by the Laconic Golf, is famous for the gorgeous and clean beaches and the abundance of fresh fish.
Elafonisos in Greek means “the island of deer”. No, you will not see any deer today sticking behind the cedars, but in the antiquity, the island was the habitat of the red deer and the favorite spot of the hunters. That is why many sanctuaries of Artemis, the Goddess of Hunting, were spread in the area.
According to the historians, Elafonisos was not always an island. It was a peninsula, called “Onou Gnathos” (Donkey’s Jaw), because of its shape. Around the 6th century BC though a tremendous earthquake engulfed a big part of the land, turning it into an islet. The sunken ancient city Poulopetri has been detected in the submarine area between the beach of Pounta in the mainland of Peloponnese and the island Pavlopetri, about 600 meters southeast of the port of Elafonisos. According to the archaeological findings, the city was an important commercial center, because of its geographical focal point, and was built around 2000 BC. While you sail to the port, if you look down very carefully, you may even see the sunk ancient constructions.
Although the whole area of Elafonisos has been declared as archaeological site, the visitors are not so interested about its past. After all, the beauties of the island are enough to make you fall in love with the place. The famous beach Simos, in the south of the island, is considered the most beautiful of the Mediterranean Sea, designated as a protected area NATURA. Endless golden sand, as fine as sugar, full of oak trees and large dunes. Clear turquoise waters, inviting you to dive and stay there forever. Fabulous landscape and an amazing view to the Kythira island: this dreamy beach is naturally the most popular of the island. For the nature lovers, there is also an organised camping, just 50 meters away from the beach. Panagia, in the west of the island, is ideal for scuba diving,due to the colorful seabed with the rich flora, while cedars and rare flowers spring up on the sandy beach. Lefki, also in the west of Elafonisos, is a small sandy beach
with a few small rocks and crystal clear water, a great choice if you want to make a difference. Kontogoni, Kalogeras and Aglyftis are also among the beaches of the island you would love to visit.
Around the port you will find cafes, taverns and bars, but do not expect an intense nightlife. Elafonisos is a quiet island, which you will visit especially for the fabulous beaches. You can choose it for a daily trip or for a longer stay, but in any case you will want to go back again and again.
