Lesbos
Lesbos is the third biggest Greek island, after Crete and Euboea, and is located in the northeast Aegean Sea. Dense olive groves and magical beaches, a famous petrified forest, plenty of wetlands, natural spas, imposing castles and ancient monuments, architectural pluralism with trademark the excellent traditional mansions, and a great history: this is Lesbos in a few words. This amazing island is a popular destination throughout the year, since it is a great combination of sea and mountain.

Lesbos is the homeland of Pittakus, one of the seven wise men of antiquity, and of the ancient lyric poets Alcaeus and Sappho (lesbian love is connected to her name, by the way). The archaeological excavations brought to light prehistoric finds indicating the human presence on the island since 3,000 years ago.

The remnants of its glorious ancient past are spread in the island, such as the Ancient Temple of Klopedi (5th century BC), the most important sanctuary of the island and probably dedicated to Apollo Napaios (in Agia Paraskevi, in the center of Lesbos), the Ancient Temple of Mesa of the 3rd century BC, where it is believed that Zeus, Hera and Dionysus were worshiped (in Agia Paraskevi as well), the Ancient Theater of Mytilene (in Kamares of Mytilene) and the Roman Aqueduct Morias, which is one of the most important technical structures in the Mediterranean Sea (in Moria of Mytilene). Do not miss to visit the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene, where the history of Lesbos from the Final Neolithic period to the Late Roman period is unfolded. (Old building: 7 A. Eftalioti street, Mytilene. New building: 8th November street, Mytilene. Visiting hours: Tuesday to Sunday 8:00-15:00, closed on Mondays. Ticket prices: 3 euros,  2 euros. Valid for both buildings).

Mytilene, the main port and capital city of Lesbos, was founded in the 11th century BC and is one of the most ancient cities of Greece. Today it is a beautiful modern city, spread in amphitheater style on seven hills. The preserved neoclassical buildings witness the heyday of the island in the 19th century AD, while the imposing Byzantine Castle in the north part of the city is one of the many sightseeing of Mytilene. The Castle of Mytilene was built at the site of the Ancient Acropole around the 6th century AD. It occupies an area of about 60 acres and is one of the largest castles in the Mediterranean Sea (Ticket prices: 2 euros, 1 euro).

Eresos, in the southwest part of the island, is one of the most beautiful places of Greece. The traditional houses, the picturesque port and the fabulous beach of the town make it one of the most popular destinations of Lesbos. Eresos was the homeland of Saphho. She was born in the 7th century BC and is the great representative of lyric poetry. Plato had called her “The Tenth Muse” and her poetry podium had been erected next to that of Homer. Her reputation was so great, that not only images and statues of her were created by ancient craftsmen, but also coins with her bust were minted in Eresos, in Mytilene and other ancient cities of the island. Today, her bust stands in the namesake square of Eresos. In the neighboring Skala of Eresos, you can also visit the Ancient Acropole (free entrance).

The Lesbos Petrified Forest in Sigri is one of the two largest petrified forests in the world and one of the finest monuments of Greek geological heritage. It was formed 20 million years ago by volcanic eruption (Lesbos is a volcanic island). Most of the fossilized trunks belong to the conifers and angiosperms, such as pines, redwood, which is the largest plant that lived on our planet, oaks, beech, palms, cypress, linden, maple, poplar, laurel and others, and they are preserved in excellent condition.
In Sigri you can also visit the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest. Just for the record, Sigri is the biggest natural port of Lesbos and a beautiful seaside village, located 94 km from Mytilene, in the west part of the island.

40 km northeast of Lesbos, you will find Kalloni, another beautiful seaside village. Kalloni is famous for its wetland (one of the many of Lesbos), which serves as a refuge and breeding place of many rare and endangered bird species. Actually about 134 species of birds have been recorded, such as coots, avocets, black storks, white storks, pink flamingos, swans and shangs, attracting thousands of tourists every year.

As Lesbos is a big island, you will definitely need a means of transport, but the locomotion from place to place is also available via the organized urban transport of Lesbos. The sure thing is that you will have so many things to see and to do here, that one visit to Lesbos will never be enough.

How to get there: By ship: The Hellenic Seaways connects Lesbos to Piraeus, Mykonos, Chios and Syros. The NEL Lines connects Lesbos to Piraeus, Lemnos, Kabala and Thessaloniki. The ANEK Lines connects  Lesbos to Piraeus, Lemnos and Thessaloniki (the trip from Piraeus lasts around 8 1/2 hours). By air (the flight from Athens lasts 1 hour) via the Olympic Air (+30 210 96 66 666) and the Aegean Airlines (+30 210 62 61 000, 801), but charter flights from cities of Europe are also served.
