Vruson-Choras Sfakion

Loutro
One of the most popular summer destinations in the prefecture of Chania is Loutro: A beautiful seaside village of the Chora Sfakion, built at the edge of the cape Mouri. It is known for its traditional architecture, its cute beaches and the tranquility. Actually, it is the ideal place for loose vacations.

Loutro (Bath in English) took its name from the ancient baths that were found in the area. In the antiquity, it is believed that at this site there was the ancient city of Phoenix, that is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles in the Holy Bible. It was also the port of the ancient Anopolis, which is located about 12 km away, over the hill of Agia Aikaterini, in the today’s village Anopoli (a beautiful mountain village which also deserves a visit).

Loutro is more a resort, than a village. It has no permanent habitants and during the winter it falls into hibernation. In the summer it wakes up again and fills with tourists. Many of the old houses are still preserved and one of them is the Municipal Building that was used by the first Government of the revolutionary Greece in 1821.

You will find many accommodations in Loutro, many taverns and a few cafes that turn into bars at night. Just do not expect any intense nightlife. Loutro is a quiet place. What you will love the most here is that no cars are allowed in the streets. In fact, you cannot even reach Loutro by car. You can visit the resort and move from place to place only by boats and sea vessels, which makes Loutro even more picturesque and attractive.

If you love the hiking, however, Loutro will go to your list with your favorite spots. From Loutro begin and end three beautiful pathways that will lead you to amazing destinations, after you walk through sea and mountains. The one pathway will take you to the Church of Agia Aikaterini, in the namesake hill of Anopoli, where you can visit the ruins of the Ancient Anopolis (Visiting hours: 8:30-15:00). The second pathway, the E4, can take you either to Chora Sfakion if you walk to the east or to Agia Roumeli if you walk to the west. You can also do your hiking in the impressing Aradaina Gorge. This pathway will lead you to the beach Marmara where you can enjoy your swimming. And then you can take the E4 and go back to Loutro, tired but happy.

The two beaches of the small bay are cute and the waters are always calm. These are not the only options for swimming in Loutro though, since every day a boat leaving from the Loutro’s port will take you to two other beautiful beaches, Glyka Nera (to the east) and Marmara (to the west). Or you can also rent a canoe and explore the beaches of the area (which is the best idea of all).

How to get there: By car from Chania to Chora Sfakion (distance 72,4 km) via EO Chanion Rethimnou/VOAK/E75/EO90 and Provincial Road Vruson-Choras Sfakion or by bus from Chania to Chora Sfakion. Chania bus station, tel.: +30 28210 93 052. From Chora Sfakion, you will go by boat to Loutro. The trip lasts 15 minutes.
