Palaiochora
This beautiful seaside Cretan town is also known as the “Bride of the Lybian Sea”. Why? Do not be hasty, we will explain you in the next few phrases. Built on a long and narrow peninsula at the north of the prefecture of Chania to begin with, Palaiochora enjoys a breathtaking view to the sea, while is naturally protected by the surrounding mountains. Picturesque houses adorned by bougainvilleas and oleanders frame the tree planted narrow streets that are ideal for walking, while you are exploring the town.

Now, apart from its natural beauty, Palaiochora won the title of the “bride”because of its history. Once upon a time, the peninsula where Palaiochora is built was under the sea. The only part of the current area that was visible was the hill Fortezza (where the Venetians would build later a fortress), and it seemed like a rocky islet in the middle of the sea. And suddenly a powerful earthquake made the difference, as it brought on the surface the underwater peninsula. And here comes the bride!

Although we do not know when exactly Palaiochora was built, the sure thing is that it definitely existed in 1278, when the Venetians picked it for its strategic position and built the  fortress Selino on the hill/ex islet. Although it was never powerful, it was the only castle in this area and today, only some ruins still adorn the hill Fortezza.
Palaiochora is also famous for the hospitality. The habitants love the tourists and make sure that their visit or stay would be something to remember. Lovely accommodations, bars, cafes and restaurants are spread in the area, while everybody in Palaiochora will make you feel at home all the time.

Natural beauty, interesting history, lovely architecture and warm hospitality... What did we miss to mention? Oh yes, the beaches. Palaiochora proudly presents a large variety of beaches, others with pebbles and others with sand, so different the one of the other, like well hidden secrets waiting to be revealed (oh well, not really... Palaiochora is a massively touristic place and it is no wonder why). And the sea is wonderful in each of them. Just pick a beach a day and you will never feel disappointed.

What else you can do, you ask? You can take a boat from the picturesque port and visit Elafonisi, Sougia, Loutro, Agia Roumeli, Sfakia or the island of Gavdos. You can rent a boat and go fishing. Or dive. Or just spend the whole day in the beach. You will have a great time, whatever you choose to do, that is for sure.
