Сугия
Деревня была построена у выхода из ущелья Агия Ирини. Местные галечные пляж очень красивы и делятся на частные, организованные и дикие. Каждый сможет выбрать себе место для купания по душе. Здесь немало отелей и таверн, а главная достопримечательность - храм Святого Понтелеймона. Он расположен на западной окраине Сугии, а мозаичный пол в храме датируется VI веком, он принадлежал другому храму, на месте которого был построен нынешний. Также хорош византийский храм Святой Ирины, расположенный на горе. Путь к нему составит порядка 30 минут, а вид отсюда открывается потрясающий.
В древности основным занятием жителей Сугии было - разведение свиней. Причиной тому было огромное количество дубов и соответственно желудей в этой местности. Древний город процветал особенно во времена Рима и Византии. Также тут находился порт дорийского города Элирос, который считался важнейшим из древних городов Крита. От древней Сугии осталось совсем немного артефактов - их можно увидеть в восточной части поселка. Руины древнего Элироса можно увидеть в деревне Родовани (10 км от Сугии). Часы работы: 8:30-15:00. Также
интересен Лиссос, второй порт древнего Элироса. Добраться до него можно по трассе Е4 и путь составит порядка двух часов. Здесь можно увидеть останки древнего города, а также Асклепион и множество построек римского и византийского периодов.
Для любителей природы имеет смысл отправится на автобусе в Агия Ирини (то же направление, что и Ханья), где вы сможете пересечь одноименное ущелье и вернуться в Сигию назад пешком. А если сесть на автобус по направлению к Омалос, то можно посетить ущелье Самария, довольно известное на Крите. Через 6 часов похода через ущелье вы окажетесь в Агия Румели, откуда можно по воде вернуться назад в Сигию. Также отсюда можно отправится на корабле к островам Элафониси и Гавдос.

Sougia
Once upon a time, Sougia was the favorite place of the hippies, who lived in their tents and enjoyed the vast beach with the crystal clear waters. Actually, that was about 20 years ago... Today, Sougia is a lovely seaside Cretan village, far more cosmopolitan than it used to be. Although a few tents still make their appearance every summer in the beach, especially at its east part which is the favorite of the nudists, the older hippies probably miss the carefree past of the place.
Sougia, to begin with, is very beautiful. The village is built at the exit of the gorge of Agia Irini, west from the bed of the torrent Agieriniotis. That means that it is blessed with indescribable natural beauty. The beach, strewn with small pebbles, stretches in front of the blue sea waters, from where small and larger rocks emerge, creating a kind of private smaller beaches (no wonder that the hippies and the nudists loved the place).
In the antiquity, the pig breeding was widespread in Sougia, due to the abundance of the oaks in the surrounding mountains (the pigs love the acorns). The ancient city flourished in the Roman and Byzantine times and was the port of the Dorian city Elyros, one of the most important ancient Cretan cities. Today, only a few remains of the ancient Sougia are still visible at the east side of the torrent Agieriniotis, while the ruins of the Ancient Elyros are located in the Kefalas hill, near the village Rodovani (10,8 km distance from Sougia, via the provincial road Chanion-Sougias. The today’s Sougia is full of hotels and rooms to let, taverns, restaurants and a few bars that make the nights more interesting. One of the highlights of the village is the church of Agios Panteleimonas, situated at the west edge of Sougia. It is known for the wonderful mosaic floor, which is what is left from the previous church of the 6th century that was built at this site. Equally beautiful is the Byzantine chapel of Agia Irini, built in the wooded mountainside. You can reach it after 30 minutes hiking among the pines. The view to Sougia from there is outstanding.
If you love hiking, you can also take the pathway E4 that will lead you in the ancient Lissos, the second port of the ancient Elyros. You will need about two hours to get there. Among the remains of the ancient city, what stand out are the Asclepeion and few other Roman and Byzantine buildings. The same pathway can also take you to Palaiochora, from where you can take a boat or a bus to return to Sougia.
The nature lovers can also take the morning bus from Sougia to Agia Irini (the same bus can also take you to Chania) and from there you can cross the beautiful Agia Irini Gorge which will lead you back to Sougia. Or you can take the bus to Omalos, in order to visit the Samaria Gorge, the most famous Cretan highlight. After 6-7 hours hiking you will end up to Agia Roumeli, from where you can take a boat and go back to Souda. All you need is a good physical condition and the mood to explore places of unique natural beauty.
If you also want to explore other beaches, you can visit Elafonisi or the island of Gavdos by boat. During the summer days, three boats per week depart from Souda to Gavdos and return in the evening. Who does not love the daily excursions in beautiful places after all?
