Озеро Курнас
В средние века озеро носило название Коресия, так как неподалёку находился храм, построенный в честь Афины Коресийской. Нынешнее название появилось из арабского языка и означает попросту - “озеро”.
О происхождении Курны существует легенда. Однажды молодая красивая девушка решила прогуляться из деревни в которой жила. Поскольку она покидала деревню впервые, ее вызвался сопровождать местный старик. Решив передохнуть, она присела на скалу и стала расчесывать свои роскошные светлые волосы. Солнечный свет озарил их и они стали еще прекрасней. Проходивший мимо старик посмотрел на нее и начал приближаться с дурными намерениями. В этот момент она пронзительно закричала проклятие, которое превратило место на котором она сидела в озеро, а ее саму в призрака. Считается. что люди с добрым сердцем могут увидеть здесь фею, расчесывающую волосы.
В волшебное происхождение озера можно верить или не верить, но выглядит оно действительно сказочно. Летом здесь можно купаться, а зимой наиболее популярным видом отдыха считается катание на горных велосипедах. Озеро Курна входит в европейскую программу по защите естественной красоты и экологии Natura 2000. Помимо рыб в нем обитают черепахи. А если отправится немного южнее - то в местечке Кератида находится одноименная пещера, обнаруженная в 1961 году. У этой пещеры имеется несколько несколько входов на разных уровнях.

Lake Kournas
Among the countless natural beauties of Crete, the lake Kournas holds a prominent position, as the only natural Cretan lake with fresh water. Let alone the magical location. But let’s start from the beginning. The lake Kournas is situated in a small valley, surrounded by mountains and high hills, at the east of Chania, very close to the prefecture of Rethymno.
The legend has it that once upon a time, a girl, who was famous for her beauty, was living in a nearby village. One day, the girl decided to go for a walk out of the village, for the very first time. An old, venerable villager was offered to accompany her. While they were walking in the nature, she decided to sit on a small rock for a while to admire the surrounding beauties. Feeling so free in the nature, she let her wonderful blond hair down and she started to brush it. As the sunlight enlightened her golden hair, she looked more beautiful than ever. And the old man was suddenly attracted strongly by her. As he was approaching her with bad intentions, the girl got scared and screamed a curse which magically turned the place into a lake and made her a poltergeist. And that is how, they say, the lake Kournas was born. Sometimes, people with innocent heart can see the beautiful fairy of the lake sitting on a rock and brushing her hair... Oh, well...
Legendary or not, with a fairy or not, the lake Kournas looks like a lake from a fairy-tale. Rivers and tributaries of the surrounding mountains fill the lake with fresh water, which is abundant especially in the winter. Needless to say that you can also swim there, while you are enjoying the view to the miraculous nature. The best way to explore it is by pedalos or canoe, which you can rent at the place. And who knows? If you are lucky enough, you will even see the gorgeous fairy brushing her hair. What you will see for sure though is sea turtles, gold fish, ducks and geese swimming in the calm waters, while the gulls will be flying over your head. Something you should also know is that the lake Kournas is included in the program NATURA 2000 as a stop for migratory birds and is a protected Bird Protection Area.
Around the lake, there are little taverns that will treat you delicious pies with honey, the specialty from Sfakia that you should definitely try. About 4 km from the lake Kournas, you can also visit the namesake village, which held its traditional color and is full of tavenrs with wonderful local cuisine. Your excursion will be only completed if you will also visit the quaint cave Kournas, located in the area between the village and the lake, from where the view to the lake is breathtaking.
How to get there: By car from Chania (distance 45,4 km) via EO Chanion Rethimnou/VOAK/E75/EO90, from Rethymno (distance 25 km) via VOAK/E75.
