Воница
История этого места начинается в в 630 году до н.э., коринфянами был основан город Анакторион. Это был довольно важный древний город, однако впоследствии он был разрушен вестготами Алариха. Воница же была основана в IV века до н.э. спасшимися жителями Анаториона.
Жемчужиной Воницы считается внушительный средневековый замок, который стоит на небольшом сосновом холме над городом. Он был построен венецианцами на земле, которая принадлежала тогда Византии в XI веке. Замок Воницы, который в наши дни входит в число наиболее хорошо сохранившихся крепостей Греции, считается образцом типичного византийского города-замка. Он состоял из верхнего и нижнего акрополя и так называемой хоры - нижнего города, который был эпицентром гражданской, экономической и религиозной жизни. Внутри замка, к северо-западу от акрополя, есть византийская церковь Святой Софии, которая считается образцом редкой архитектуры. Также две византийские часовни можно увидеть в роще около крепости.
Еще одна визитная карточка Воницы - небольшой островок Кукумитса. Он соединен с материком множеством небольших мостов. Кукумитса славится своим сосновым лесом - поэтому среди местных жителей это место крайне популярное. Сюда добираются как пешком, так и на велосипедах. Помимо бурной растительности на острове ест и неплохой пляж, а вот построек немного, всего одна - часовня Агиос Нектария. В самой Вонице можно увидеть немало христианских храмов. Храм Святого Спиридона находится в центре города, храм Святого Николая с каменной колокольней, монастырь Святой Параскевы, который находится по дороге из Воницы в деревню Полиампела. А из не церковных построек у местных жителей популярен только маяк - именно с него здесь принято любоваться закатами. Здесь же неподалеку находится главный променад города с множеством кофеен и таверн.
Несмотря на то что Воница считается круглогодичным курортом, наиболее популярен он именно летом - здесь имеется сразу несколько организованных пляжей.

Vonitsa
Picturesque buildings that follow faithfully the local architecture, a beautiful coastal road and a modern marina full of yachts, an imposing Venetian castle that stands like guard in the middle of a lovely forest, and an overgrown islet in the entrance of the bay, as beautiful as a postcard. No wonder that Vonitsa is considered as one of the most beautiful seaside towns of the prefecture of Aetolia-Acarnania.
The story of the town began around the end of the 4th century AD, when the survivors of the neighboring Anaktorio fled to this washed by the Ambracian Gulf area and built Vonitsa. Anaktorio, by the way, was an important ancient city, that was founded by the Corinthians in 630 BC, but was destroyed by the Visigoths of Alaric.
Jewel of Vonitsa is the imposing medieval castle which stands on a small pine hill over the town. It was built by the Venetians on behalf of the Byzantines in the 11th century, it is listed among the best preserved castles in Greece and it has been declared as “an outstanding Byzantine monument”. The castle of Vonitsa shows the typical tripartite arrangement and structure of the Middle Byzantine castle town. It is consisted of the upper acropolis, the lower acropolis and the Chora, namely the fortified lower city that was the epicenter of civil, economic and religious life. Inside the castle, to the northwest of the acropolis, there is the Byzantine church of Agia Sophia, which is an interesting sample of rare architecture.
Around the castle a lovely grove extends, ideal for romantic walks and long breaths of fresh air. Among the trees, like well hidden secrets, you will also discover two beautiful chapels -the post Byzantine church of Assumption is one of them.
In the middle of the bay, right across the grove, there is the trademark of Vonitsa, the dreamy islet of Koukoumitsa, which is connected with the town with a picturesque stone footbridge. Koukoumitsa is one of these places that look like heavens in Earth: The green color of the pines, the eucalyptus and the cypress trees that adorn the islet compete with the deep blue color of the sea that surrounds them. The locals and the tourists love to visit Koukoumitsa on foot or by bicycle, to enjoy the nature and the beauty of the place and dive into the waters of its beach. The sunset from here is magical. The only building of the islet is the whitewashed chapel of Agios Nektarios.
In the many attractions of Vonitsa there are also the impressive Metropolitan church of Agios Spyridonas, in the center of the town, the church of Agios Nickolaos with the stone bell tower, the monastery of Agia Paraskevi which is located on the road from Vonitsa to the village Paliampela, but it is also visible from the Vonitsa’s coastal road and the Lighthouse, where the locals enjoy the sunset. The quaint neighborhoods are ideal for wandering, let alone the coastal road which is always full of people who walk or sit at the dozens of cafes, bars and taverns that are lined up in front of the sea.
Vonitsa is an ideal place to visit throughout the year, but if you go in summer, you will discover that the organized beach of the town along with the neighboring beaches of the area are another good reasons that highlight the place as a popular tourist destination.
