Карпениси
Поселение Карпениси получило известность еще в эпоху Византийской империи и появилось на рубеже X и XI веков. Во время греческой революции 1821 года в этом регионе происходило немало сражений. Особенно известно одно из них. Оно так и называется – Битва при Карпениси и произошло 8 августа 1823 года. Главным героем сражения стал Маркос Ботсарис, потерявший здесь жизнь. Некоторые историки пишут, что турки потеряли в этом бою 1500 человек убитыми. Греки потеряли около 40 человек убитыми и столько же ранеными. Греки решили не хоронить Боцариса на месте, опасаясь, что турки осквернят его останки. Тело его было отправлено в Месолонги. По пути эскорт сделал остановку в монастыре Пруссос, где лечился от туберкулёза Караискакис. Шатаясь, Караискакис спустился в церковь и поцеловал покойника со словами: «когда бы брат, Маркос, и я такой смертью…». Боцарис был похоронен в Месолонги. Тогда было произведено 33 пушечных выстрела - ровно столько, сколько ему было лет.
Также немало боев происходило неподалеку от Карпениси и во время Второй Мировой Войны. К счастью, традиционная архитектура была сохранена практически нетронутой. Поэтому в наши дни мы можем любоваться особняками, арочными мостами и византийскими храмами. Один из них – Агия Триада, был построен в XVII веке и находится в самом центре города на пощади Ботсарис. Не менее интересна Староместская ратуша, которая расположена там же. Помимо этих зданий на площади можно увидеть каменный фонтан и, конечно же множество ресторанов и кафе.
В Карпениси также расположен знаменитый спортивный центр, который считается одним из лучших в Европе. Именно здесь тренеруются баскетбольная и футбольная сборные страны, а также команда по легкой атлетике.
Крайне живописны местные холмы. Один из них – Агиос Димитриос, находится в западной части города. На нем можно посетить одноименную часовню, построенную в 1886 году. Пожалуй, именно отсюда открывается самый захватывающий вид.
Примерно в двух километрах к северу от Карпениси находится прекрасная местность под названием Кефаловрисо. Замечательно оно в первую очередь нетронутой природой. Огромное количество многовековых платанов и водных источников, которые впадают в реку Карпенисиотис, а она в свою очередь – в озеро Кремастон. Здесь собираются любители рафтинга, альпинизма и байдарочных прогулок.
В 12 километрах от города и на высоте 1840 метров расположен горнолыжный центр Велухи – главное место притяжения в зимнее время года. Центр не самый маленький - семь подъемников, двенадцать треков разного уровня сложности, а также собственная лыжная школа.
Надо сказать, что популярен Карпениси не только зимой, но и в летнее время. Сюда съезжаются со всей Греции что бы отдохнуть от жары – ведь температура в горах намного ниже обычной. Также многие приезжают сюда лечиться от туберкулеза - ведь местный воздух считается лечебным.

Karpenisi
Blessed with countless natural beauties, impressive traditional architecture and significant history, it is not wonder that Karpenisi holds a prominent position in the list with the most popular tourist Greek destinations throughout the year -although in the winter time it is at its best. Built at an altitude of 960 meters, on the southwest side of the Mount Tymfristos (also known as Velouchi), in the prefecture of Evrytania, this beautiful mountainous town is surrounded by fir trees and dozens of springs of fresh water.
Although the wider region of Evrytania had rich activity since the antiquity, the settlement of Karpenisi became known in the Byzantine years, as it was built in its current location between the 10th and the 11th century. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, many historical battles took place in the villages around Karpenisi, while in the years of the German occupancy, the town and the surrounding mountains were the bases of the National Resistance.
Luckily, the traditional architecture has been retained almost untouched, giving the chance to the visitors to admire plenty of well preserved mansions, arched bridges and Byzantine churches. Among the buildings that will draw your attention are the Old Town Hall and the beautiful metropolitan church of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) which was built in the 17th century and is a remarkable sample of the Byzantine architectural style. Both buildings are located in the Mpotsaris square, the central square of the town, with the typical plane tree and the stone fountain, where dozens of taverns and cafes will offer you local delicacies and the necessary break from your wandering in the quaint roads and the surrounding areas.
In Karpenisi there is also a fine athletic center, one of the most well organised in Europe, capable to host a variety of athletic events. That is why the Greek national football and basketball teams, the athletics champions and the Olympic champions usually use it for their training.
The nature around Karpenisi is indescribably beautiful and ideal for exlporation. At the west side of the town, you will find the overgrown hill of Agios Dimitrios, where the namesake quaint chapel stands since 1886. It is needless to say that the view from this spot is breathtaking.
Around 2 km from the town center, to the north, a small heaven in Earth is waiting for you. It is the lovely countryside Kefalovryso, gifted with huge plane trees and an abundance of springs of fresh water. These springs actually feed the river Karpenisiotis, that stems in the mount Tymfristos, crosses the region of Evrytania, joins the river Krikelopotamos and finally ends up at the lake Kremasta, about 56 km from Karpenisi. The nature lovers will definitely appreciate the exploration of the areas around the river with the rich flora and fauna and the impressive canyons, while the sport lovers will enjoy plenty of activities, such as hiking, climbing, 4x4, rafting, kayak, you name it.
About 12 km from Karpenisi, the fully organized ski center of Velouchi is another great reason to visit the area during the winter. It is located at an altitude of 1840 meters, featuring seven lifts, twelve tracks and a ski school.
The daily excursions to the neighboring traditional villages and the vivid nightlife of the town are also among the many reasons that make Karpenisi a very interesting place to go. After all, so many people who choose it annually for their vacation cannot be wrong.
