 Museum of Greek Folk Art
The Museum of Greek Folk Art brings together works of the modern Greek cultural heritage. Its rich collections highlight the elements that shaped the cultural identity of the Modern Greeks, the period from the mid 17th to the 20th century. The museum is housed in a three-stored beautiful building of the ‘70s, in Plaka. The tour starts from the ground floor, where you can admire the rich collection of embroidery of the museum, which is one of the best in the world. In the mezzanine, the objects of everyday life (dishes, distaffs, canteens, by clay and other materials) flirt with the figures of the Theater of Shadows (the famous Karagkiozis and his friends) and the impressive disguises of the Carnival. On the first floor, the exhibition “Images of Ethnographic Today” presents the particular lifestyle that survives even today in Olympos of Karpathos island in Dodecanese. In the same floor you can also see a room painted by the great Greek folk painter Theophilos (1870-1934), and some of his famous paintings. Going up to the second floor of the museum, you will find jewelry, weapons and sacred objects, made with artistry and passion, while on the third floor you will be enchanted by the rich collection of the elaborate costumes, from all parts of Greece.
