“Sonja”, The New Riga Theatre
In the ancient Greek drama, the female roles were always interpreted by male actors and that was not a surprise at all. In nowadays though, when a male actor impersonates a woman is something extremely intriguing. And when this play is written by a Russian female writer and novelist, member of a notorious family, and directed by an internationally recognized Latvian director, then this is something you definitely want to see. But let’s start from the beginning.

“Sonja” is written by Tatyana Tolstaya, a Russian writer, TV host, publicist, novelist and essayist from the Tolstoy family (her grandfather, also a writer, was a distant relative of Leon Tolstoy). Her play is about a lonely woman in the ‘40s, who tries to deal with the burden of existence and the vicissitudes of everyday life with a positive outlook, while she’s waiting for her prince to come. The famous Latvian director Alvis Hermanis, one of the founders of the New Riga Theatre in 1992, is known for his artistic approach which combines the bare aesthetics of the German school and the playful, robust acting of the Russian. He chose to give the role of the rather ugly and silly, but so kindhearted Sonja to a male actor, making things even more interesting.
The play “Sonja” is presented by the New Riga Theatre in Athens, for three days, in the context of the Athens and Epidaurus Festival 2015 (June 1-August 29, 2015).
