Монастырь Фанеромени
В древности на этом месте находился храм Артемиды. Согласно легенде, в 64 году н.э. когда ученики Апостола Павла Иродий и Социан проповедовали на острове слово господние, статуя Артемиды раскололась на части. Первые христиане Лефкады построили на месте древнего храма часовню и первые кельи.
Монастырь посвящен Деве Марии, а его название в переводе означает “явление”. Это название напрямую связано с главной иконой, украсившей монастырь. По традиции того времени монастырь заказал иконы монаху и иконописцу Каллисту в Константинополе. Что бы обрести вдохновение Каллист долго держал пост и молился. А потом чудесным образом рисунок иконы сам появился на деревянной доске. Иконописцу же осталось лишь нанести на нее цвета. Так монастырь получил свое название. К сожалению в наши дни можно увидеть лишь копию той чудотворной иконы, так как она была уничтожена при пожаре в 1887 году. В том же году монастырь был восстановлен, а на Афоне была написана копия иконы.
В наши дни монастырь выглядит обновленным так как несколько лет назад тут был произведен капитальный ремонт. Также были построены новые кельи, библиотека и часовня Святого Силуана Антония. На данный момент тут проживают 9 монахов и один начинающий. Для туристов здесь безусловно будет, что посмотреть. На территории монастыря находятся целых два музея. Один из них ожидаемо посвящен церковной тематике. Тут можно увидеть экспонаты местного церковного искусства, старинные рукописи, византийские иконы, и церковное облачение. Второй музей неожиданно посвящен военно-морской тематике и здесь вы увидите модели морских судов. Еще один сюрприз монастыря: местный небольшой зоопарк с павлинами, оленями и мелкими животными.
Монастырь открыт для посетителей с рассвета до заката и закрыт с 14:00 до 16:00 часов. Он расположен неподалеку от деревни Фрини.

Faneromeni Monastery
This holy monastery is the religious center of Lefkada. Perched on a hill, just 4 km from the city of Lefkada, it looks like it blesses both the city and the whole island.
In the antiquity, at this site there was a temple of Artemis. The legend has it that in 64 AD, when the disciples of the Apostle Paul, Irodianos and Sosianos, preached the word of the Lord in the island, the statue of the ancient goddess was crashed in a miraculous way. The first Christians of the island built a small church at the site of the ancient temple. Progressively, they enlarged the church and built the first cells.
The monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The name Faneromeni means “Revealed” and is referred to the amazing icon of the Mother of Lord that adorn the monastery’s church. The story of this icon is extremely interesting. According to the tradition, the monastery ordered the painting of the icon to the monk and iconographer Kallistos in Constantinople. In order to get inspiration, the monk prayed a lot and fasted. And then, miraculously, the design of the icon was revealed on the wood, and Kallistos had only to add the colors. Unfortunately, today you can only see a copy of this miraculous icon, painted in the Mount Athos in 1887, because the original one was destroyed by fire along with the church of the monastery. However it was rebuilt in 1887 as well.
The monastery was recently renovated, and new cells were added along with a library and the chapel of Agios Silouanos Athonitis. It is the only fully manned monastery of Lefkada, with 9 monks and 1 novice monk. What you should definitely visit there is the very interesting Ecclesiastic Museum, which houses exhibits of the local ecclesiastical art and tradition, such as incunabula, manuscripts, Byzantine icons, silverware and vestments. Also remarkable is the Naval Museum of the monastery that exhibits ship models.
Walking In the tidy premises of the monastery, with the trees, the flower beds and the small lakes where small fish swim, another pleasant surprise is waiting for you: A mini zoo, with peacocks, deer and other small animals, making the place even more heavenly. If we add to these the breathtaking view you can enjoy from there, then the reasons to visit the Faneromeni monastery are quite many, apart from the religious ones of course.

How to get there: By car from the city of Lefkada (distance 4,4 km) via Provincial Road Lefkada-Apolpaina.
