Площадь Омония: сердце Афин

А вот тут без пафоса не обойтись. Площадь Омония - это сердце Афин. Разбитое сердце. Как и упоминаемый в посте про Псири, Берлин, который часто называли разбитым сердцем Европы. Дело в том, что Омония, которая в шестидесятые-семидесятые была излюбленным местом встреч афинян, последние лет двадцать стала наполняться нелегальными иммигрантами. С тех пор афиняне Омонию разлюбили. Напрочь. После шести вечера на территории слева от улицы Афинас еще более-менее спокойно, хотя и там гулять не советуют, но вот направо лучше не ходить. Потому что это уже вроде как чужая территория. Неспокойная. Впрочем, платят же люди бешеные деньги, занимаясь экстремальными видами спорта, а тут - бесплатно.

Но если так получится, что вы уже тут оказались, то пользуйтесь случаем: в местных киосках представлена самая разная русскоязычная пресса. Например, тут можно купить брошюру Павла Глобы на русском языке. Купить, выбрать наугад любую страницу, прочесть, и с полученным знанием смело идти гулять по самому неспокойному району Афин.

 

Добраться:станция метро “Омония”. Красивейшая,кстати, станция.

The Omonoia Square is literally the  heart of Athens. It is the oldest square of  the city, from which the main thoroughfares radiate: Stadiou, Athena, Panepistimiou, Septembriou 3, Piraeus and Agiou Konstantinou. It also has a great history. When it was constructed in 1846,  it was named Square of the Palace, because according to the initial plans, the edifices of the Palace would be built around this square. Those plans were never realized. Later it was renamed in Othonos Square in honor of the King Otto, but in 1862 it was renamed in Omonoia (Concord) Square, because it was where that the leaders of the opponent politcal parties had gathered and gave oath of “concord”, after the bloody riots  between them which had as result the dismissal of the king. In the later years, Omonoia Square was turned into the secular and cultural center of Athens, as the biggest theaters of the city were built in this area, and has received numerous architectural interventions to reach its present form. It has also experienced serious urban decay in recent years, being plagued by drug dealing, prostitution and theft, especially in its western part. Despite that, it is still a focal point for commercial and social life in Athens, especially for the various immigrant communities. The station of the Athens Metro named also Omonoia serves the area.
