Ios
A few years ago, Ios was still the island of the bohemians, the hippies and the tourists who preffered to run barefoot in the streets and enjoy rich nightlife and cheap holidays in Cyclades, away from the cosmopolitanism and the luxury of Mykonos and Santorini. Today it competes both these islands with expensive hotels and high benefits, while still maintains some of its former purity. Ios is a very beautiful island, to begin with. It took its name from the abundance of flowers (“ia” in ancient Greek) which grown in the island.

It is inhabited since the prehistoric times. Due to its geographical position as one of the southernmost islands of the Cyclades and strategically located on the sea route to Crete and the southern Asia, played a key role in the development of the Cycladic civilization. Archaeological finds on the hill Skarkos revealed the existence of a prehistoric settlement, dated in the 3rd millennium BC. This archaeological site is very well preserved and was awarded in 2008 with the EU’s cultural heritage award in the category “Maintenance of archaeological sites”. In the small archaeological museum of Ios, you can see all the significant finds from this prehistoric settlement and also the ones from the ancient city which had been excavated in Chora. The museum is housed in a beautiful neoclassical building, in Chora of Ios. In Ios there is also the Tomb of Homer, the great Greek Epic poet of the famous “Iliad” and “Odyssey”. It is located on a hill in north Ios, over the bay Plakoto.

Being in Ios, do not miss to visit the church of Panagia Gremniotissa, which is the trademark of the island. Perched on a hill in the Chora, it offers a magnificent view. But this one is not the only church of Ios which worth a visit. The whole island is full of bigger or smaller temples, all whitewashed and picturesque, crowned by the typical blue Cycladic dome. Other sights of the island is the Palaiokastro (Old Castle), perched on a hill of west Ios, which was built by the Venetians, and the windmills which are scattered in Ios.

The beaches of Ios, although not as too many as in the other Cyclades, are also a great reason to visit the island. Magkanari and Mylopotas are the most famous and the most beautiful of them, but you will also love the beaches Koumpara, Agia Theodoth, Psathi and Yalos Ios.

How to get there: By boat from the port of Piraeus. Ios is also linked by boat with other Cycladic islands.
