Педион ту Ареос

Существует мнение, что Афины были бы более привлекательны если бы в городе было меньше строений и больше парков. Их действительно немного - Ботанический сад, Парк Венезелоса, Заппео.. Еще один называется Педион тоу Ареос и находится на пересечении проспекта Александрос и улицы Мавроматион. Он был основан в 1934 году и его общая площадь равняется 230 акрам. Тут помимо 70 видов деревьев и 65 видов кустарников, находятся открытый амфитеатр, одно из самых исторических кафе города, три детских площадки и два храма. Причем один из них - храм Архангелов был построен в XVI веке на месте более древнего храма. Рядом с ним располагается памятник так называемому “Священному войску” - первой организованной группе греческих солдат во время революции 1821 года. Другой храм парка, храм Святого Харалаброса”, более новый - он был построен в начале XIX века. Возвращаясь к разговору о памятниках парка, то он полностью посвящен героям греческой революции 1821 года. Всего же мраморных монументов здесь 21, а главный из них, Королю Константину на коне, располагается у главного входа. Всего парк имеет 16 входов.

 

Педион тоу Ареос довольно часто принимал различные концерты и фестивали. Например до 2014 года именно здесь проходил ежегодный книжный фестиваль, который сейчас он переехал в Заппео.

Athens would be far more prettier if it had less buildings and more parks, I must admit. The Pedion tou Areos is one of the few public parks of the city and one of the most famous. It was designed in 1934, in honor of the heroes of the Greek Revolution of 1821. So it is no wonder that 21 marble statues of them are spread under the hundrends of trees, keeping company to the statue of the equestrian King Constantine A’ at the main entrance of the park (at the junction of Alexandras Avenue with Mavrommataion street) and the neighboring imposing statue of Athina. 

 

Walking in the 230 acres of the park, you will meet (apart from the statues) 70 species of trees and 65 species of shrubs, three playgrounds, a theater, an open amphitheater, one of the most historic cafes of Athens and two churches. Talking about the churches, the one of them is the beautiful medieval church of Pammegiston Taxiarchon (Archangels), which was built in the 16th or the 17th century, on the ruins of an elder temple. Near the church there is the monument of the Soldiers of the Sacred Band, which was the first organized military unit of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and the Greek army in general. The other church is the small medieval temple of Agios Charalambos, built either in the 18th century or the early 19th century, located at the east of the Church of Pammegiston Taxiarchon. 

 

The Pedion tou Areos often hosts various festivals. Until 2014, for instance, the park hosted the annual Book Festival, combining the fresh air with the love for culture, but last year the book lovers had met in the Athens Odeon instead. We do not know yet if the Book Festival of this year will return to its usual spot. Nevertheless, as the place is offered for many kinds of festivals and exhibitions, it is not unlikely to do some shopping at the park the day you will visit it.

 

The Pedion tou Areos has 16 entrances, but the main one is located at the junction of Alexandras Avenue with Mavrommataion street (remember, the one with the statue of the King Constantine A’ ). It is close to the metro station Victoria.
