Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens
The majestic Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Mother of God, is the cathedral church of the Archbishop of Athens and all Greece. The original plans of the church were made by the Danish architect Theophilos Hansen and the construction began in 1842. In 1846, the design was converted by the architect Dimitrios Jejas who added the Greek-Byzantine elements. After his death, the French architect FranÁois Boulanger finalized his work. It was completed in 1862, and for the construction have been used materials from 72 demolished churches. The Cathedral is a three-aisled, domed basilica, 40 meters long, 20 meters wide and 24 meters high, with two built towers in the corners of the west side. The frescoes in the interior, which are works of Spyridon Giallinas and Alexander Seitz, follow the Byzantine tradition, while the decoration was made by the painter Konstantino Fanelli. The sculptural architectural elements, the capitals and the pulpit were designed by the sculptor George Fitali. Inside the Cathedral, there are also the tombs of the martyr Patriarch Gregorios V and the Holy Filothei Athenaia, who were killed by the Ottomans during the Ottoman period. An earthquake in 1999 caused severe damage to the interior of the Cathedral, which has since limited its functionality. The repair works will be completed in 2015. Outside the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, there are the statues of two great figures of the Greek History: the one is Constantinos Paleologos, who was the last emperor of Byzantium, and the other is the Bishop Damaskinos, who was Archbishop of Athens and All Greece (July 1922-May 1949), Prime Minister and Deputy King of Greece.
