Kythnos
Part of the West Cyclades, Kythnos is a low profile island, which can meet the high expectations of the visitors: Fabulous beaches, natural beauty, warm hospitality, picturesque churches and monasteries, ancient monuments and the typical Cycladic architecture, the trademark of this island complex. The legend has it that it took its name from Kythnos, the leader of the Dryopes, the first settlers of the island in the 13th century BC, alhough excavations in the area Maroulas indicate that the first inhabitants showed up during the Mesolithic Era (8500-6500 BC) and built the most ancient settlement of Cyclades. The excavations have brought to light remains of circular structures, that probably were used as places of residence, and a few burials.

The whole island though is full of ancient remnants. The fortified citadel in the north steep edge of Kythnos, which is now known as the Castle of Oria or Katakefalou, is identified with the island’s capital in the Byzantine times, but it seems like it was already inhabited since prehistoric times. Another fortified citadel of the island, Kastellas, located in the west coast, seems to have been founded in the early historical times, but was abandoned at the end of the Archaic period. In Vryokastro or Rigokastro, as the region on the northeast coast of the island is called today, the ancient city of Kythnos was built. Among the numerous finds,  there were funerary reliefs, sculptures, architectural elements, inscriptions, etc. The biggest part of relief funerary columns of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens today derived for the main ancient cemetery of this city.  In the archaeological site there are also the sanctuaries of the Gods of
Samothrace and the Venus, which are two monumental rectangular buildings, the sanctuary of Apollo and Artemis, very well preserved parts of the walls and the autonomous fortress, and parts of the aqueduct.

What else you can see in Kythnos? You can visit the Byzantine Museum, wich is housed in the church of St. George in Dryopida. Open daily 10:00 to 14:00 and 19:00 to 21:00.  You can get an idea of the life of the people of earlier times, in the Folkore Museum which is also in Drypioda. You can go to the Wind and Solar Park, near the site of the heliport just outside the Chora. You can explore the cave Kataphiki, which is one of the biggest in Greece with stalactites and stalagmites, in Dryopida as well. You can enjoy the therapeutic properties of the two natural spa of the island, at Loutra. Here you can also see the baths of the first royal couple of Modern Greece, Otto and Amalia, who were regular visitors of Kythnos. You can spend countless hours in the breathtaking beaches of the island, which form picturesque bays, coves with clear water and plenty of shade from the trees for those who can not withstand the constant exposure to the sun. Agia Irini,
Liotrivi, Schinari, Agios Dimitrios, Megali Ammos Kanala are among the many choices you will have in the island, although the most impressive beach of Kythnos is Kolona, in which a strip of sand separates the sea in the middle, creating two beaches on the same beach.

The nightlife of Kythnos, although is not as intense as in Mykonos, Paros and Santorini, is quite interesting, with a few bars and clubs located in the picturesque Chora (the main town of the island), which is just 7 km away from the port Mericha. In Chora do not miss to notice the picturesque windmills and the traditional taps and arches that adorn the small, cobbled streets, which are painted with beautiful designs of lime, with themes from the island life.

How to get there: By ship from the port of Piraeus. The port of Kythnos is also linked by ship with other Cycladic islands.
